Any idea which group sang this song?
I think it was released in the late sixties or seventies.
These are the only words I can remember of it: 'Goodbye my friend it's time to die....' Thanks |

You are talking about "Seasons In The Sun", by Terry Jacks.
Got to No 1 on 23rd March 1974. |

A very depressing song, but not half as depressing as Westlife's cover version a few years ago....

Which also got to No. 1 I believe on Christmas 2002. Not sure of the year though.

It was originally a French song called Le Moribund written and sung by Jaques Brel in the early 1960s. |

Thanks Those words aren't in Seasons in the sun These are the lyrics to Seasons in the Sun Goodbye to you, my trusted friend. We've known each other since we're nine or ten. Together we climbed hills or trees. Learned of love and ABC's, skinned our hearts and skinned our knees. Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die, when all the birds are singing in the sky, Now that the spring is in the air. Pretty girls are everywhere. When you see them I'll be there. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the hills that we climbed were just seasons out of time. Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me, I was the black sheep of the family. You tried to teach me right from wrong. Too much wine and too much song, wonder how I get along. Goodbye, Papa, it's hard to die when all the birds are singing in the sky, Now that the spring is in the air. Little children everywhere. When you see them I'll be there. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the wine and the song, like the seasons, all have gone. Goodbye, Michelle, my little one. You gave me love and helped me find the sun. And every time that I was down you would always come around and get my feet back on the ground. Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die when all the bird are singing in the sky, Now that the spring is in the air. With the flowers ev'rywhere. I whish that we could both be there. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the stars we could reach were just starfish on the beach |

Well had it not been for Westlife I would never have heard it. I've only heard Westlife's version and it's beautiful. |

BTW coverlife totally ruined Seasons in the Sun, like they ruin every song they cover. |

Um well considering they never sang it on Saturday I'd find that very hard to beleive And just because YOU think they are rubbish doesn't mean that everyone has to think the same. I have been a fan of them since day one and always will be. Also I do think it's good that they cover songs as it means their fans can broden their music interest as I have. I had never heard of Bette Midlers version until I went looking for it as I liked their version so much. The same as other songs they have covered. Eg. Extreme, Phil Collins, Billy Joel, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Kenny Rodgers and Eric Clapton are just a few I would never have listened to before. |

Katie, I am an old geezer who actually remembers those old acts, an I'd like to say I agree with you. Personally I dont think Westlife are a particularly class act, but any act that gets people thinking about originality of songs and makes young people aware of those old songs is good im my opinion. It keeps those old songs alive, and encourages young people like yourself who clearly have a genuine interest in music to seek out the original numbers and enjoy them for what they are. |

Personally I enjoyed Jerry St. Clair's rendition of it on Phoenix Nights when Brian made him go on stage and keep up the pretence that he was dying (assisted by a Chorley FM cap). Priceless
