Too Many Different Dances to make Fair and Accurate Comparisons!
dancealong

Last night there seemed to me to be too many different dances going on. For those of us who are not knowledgeable about technique, it is easier to compare couples when they dance the same dance. Perhaps we will soon be at the "two dance per week" stage where one of the dances will be the same?

I think it isn't fair cos' some people are better at latin then ballroom or the other way round so they should just stick to the men doing one and the women the other!

DerChef says

100% Agree with that

Ohhhh Yeah

I completely agree.

It was unfair for people switching from AS to latin-- Mark, particularly, having to do two such very different dances. I think he suffered the most, whereas people like Matt clearly had the advantage, because he essentially got two weeks to learn the same dance--same mindset, same technique, etc etc.

I disagree with acquapanna's point slightly. It's was up to the pro's this week what dance they did, so looking at it this way, Lilia knew that Matt was comfortable with the ballroom type dances so she picked that, and Karen probably knew in the back of her mind that Mark would have a bit of difficulty with the Rumba so decided to get it out of the way.

I think you may have a point here CoR, but are we certain the pros picked the dances?

It was a bit all over the place last night. The latin dances expose any weaknesses in the dancers, whilst the ballroom routines tend to mask any deficiencies.

I thought the couples did the chosen dances because these were the styles they had not yet performed?

I agree with you. Mark was really the only celeb taken outside his comfort zone last night, but that was Karen's choice. I don't think it will do him any harm in the long run anyway, we British don't tend to like people who always do well!

I don't think it was unfair for Matt to get ballroom again, out of six performances he has now done three ballroom and three latin. The unfair advantage of the night was really Peter, who had done four ballroom and only two latin, when he was clearly much better at ballroom. No point moaning about that now though!

edit: regarding pros choosing the routines, I suppose they may not have had a completely free choice since there has to be an even mix of ballroom and latin. However, if Karen had wanted to do ballroom, I think she would have been able to argue the point since Mark has only done two ballroom dances so far

I've never understood why couples don't just do one dance a week, all doing the same one. Seems to me the fairest and most accurate way to judge a couple, see the improvement and compare to choose who to vote for. You can't really compare a waltz with a rumba for example, one is very easy to mask the other impossible.

I prefer it when they all do different dances, it makes for a more entertaining show, and we can remember back to when other people have dont those dances so we can compare.

It will be much better when they go to doing one of each. In an individual week I agree it is a bit unfair at the moment. Over the course of the competition it is fairer though because they switch over. I'm assuming Mark will be back in ballroom next week and will surely have a much better score, whereas Matt will be back in latin

I'm really keeping my fingers crossed for him, he is my absolute favourite this year.

But... yes, you might have to
Just pray that it isn't the Rumba- I take it you weren't a fan of Mattwiggle?!

I wish they'd all just do the same type of dance each week, it would be much easier to compare them that way.

I agree that everyone doing the same would probably be the best option, but too dull for the ratings.

However, there is a fine line being drawn regards ability and that's where the suspense comes in.... Matt's better at Ballroom, Louisa's better at Latin, etc. but the public are not always so dense.... they can see potential and will therefore forgive Mark a poor ballroom because they know he's great at Latin.

I'd like to see a format where once they get down to a few couples there are no more eliminations - then we can get to see them all progress (or not) and see whether they can truly reach that potential.

Pie in the sky, I know..... but it's always been frustrating to lose people and not know how they would have developed had they survived elimination.
