Sony 8GB MP3 Player?
gossipgirly
19-11-2006
Hi

I'm deciding which mp3 player I would like for Christmas and I've seen the Sony WALKMAN NW-A1200 8GB MP3 Player for £128.99, which seems to me to be a pretty good price for that amount of space. Does anyone have one and know if its any good/ any major problems?

If anyone has any other suggestions for me, it would be greatly appreciated. I want an mp3 player with at least 4GB and it must be less than £150, and relatively easy to get tracks onto(I don't have i-tunes)

Thanks for any advice

I don't know if you're after anything with this much storage, but Staples currently have the iAudio X5 30GB for £99! It's totally drag n drop, so you won't need any software.

I haven't tried the exact Sony model you mention, but their previous MP3 players have been rated top notch for sound quality. Some people complain about the software but I don't have a problem with it.

Have a browse around www.advancedmp3players.co.uk and www.amazon.co.uk for some more ideas.

No, I couldn't find anything on the website. I found a thread on this forum about it. From looking at the date the offer has been on since August. I went to my local store last week and to my amazement they had the offer there!

I have got one!! - got it for my burfdee in September
(I have the black coloured one, as whilst I really liked the chrome silver one, I was scared of scratching it ) - but I have bought the Sony Walkman carry case anyway, to keep the front cover all nice and pretty

anyhooooooo.......

The NWA1200 is the latest product in Sony's MP3 range - and according to "the man in the Sony shop in Bluewater" was brought out to sort of 'replace' the earlier versions of this model (the 20g one) as the SonicStage software is able to convert or download more song formats (ATRAC, WAV WMA etc) (and.............I have managed to copy over all my iTunes purchased music files!! sssshhhh! )

The SonicStage software that comes with the player has been zzzzzched up as apparently, the previous version was clunky, slow and crap!

This version is very easy to use - you just install the software as is - plug the USB cable into the PC port, plug it into the Walkie and then insert your CDs into the drive, import it the music in by just clicking on the Music Source prompt; once the CD tracks have been copied over to the puter hard disk, you can either select all or just choose what tracks you want to transfer over, then click the transfer arrow or use the drop down transfer menu and within one minute, the files are on the player!!

It really is as easy as that!

You then can develop a comprehensive music file on your hard disk and anything you do or change to this, you can then change the details on the player.

The sound is fab too......although, I have purchased separately, "around the ear" phones, so I can listen whilst laying in bed; those "plug" type phones hurt my ears after awhile

You can build your own sound choice too, choosing bass/treble etc

The little screen display gives all the information about the track/artist you are listening to....

Tracks can be selected by artist, year, genre etc or Intelligent Shuffle...or you can just create your own playlist in SonicStage and transfer it over or bookmark the tracks you like as they are being played and just play those.....

I have also bought the Sony Sound Dock speaker set so I can listen in and around the house

and I have on order, a little portable speaker set set to take with me so, so I can listen in the car!! (I am also waiting for the remote control device as well, so hurry up please Mr Amazon man!)

I am so impressed with my little player, I will be buying two more, for my children, for their Christmas presents!

So yes.........in a nutshell - I LOVE MY SONY WALKMAN NWA1200 MP3 PLAYER!!

EDIT:

they are £128.99 from Amazon - mine cost £149 (from Sony Bluewater) only 6 weeks ago!!!

Of course strictly speaking the Sony Walkman is not an mp3 player - sound-files transferred to it are converted into another format. So if you expect to be able to "share" "mp3"s off it with someone else prepare to be disappointed.

As I am discovering. So what do you do when you have some downloaded tracks from t'internet? Can you get them to convert so they go into the Sony Walkman?

Anyone know?

You can use software like Nero 7 to convert them into a different format. Can take a while. I don't think many "MP3 Players" use MP3 anymore, the ipode uses MP4.

it is possible for the sony walkmen mp3 players to play mp3s in their natural format. a few years ago they had to be converted to atrac but now will play mp3 and atrac. in fact, the software will recognise wma files and also aac files to boot.

£128 for the 8GIG version? I paid £139 for the 20gig version!!

I would like to point out that the Sony Walkman ISN'T an MP3 Player!! It plays Sony's own format similar to Sony Minidisc. If you have MP3's they get converted to the Sony format. Sorry for the rant but calling the walkman an MP3 player is false advertising.

The iPod can use MP3 natively, as i'm sure the recent 'walkmans' can.

I know the first ones were restricted to ATRAC, but i thought that'd been eliminated since the NW-HD3?

You're correct.

Even MiniDisc (Hi-MD) can play MP3s natively with the more recent SonicStage software.

Cheers, i thought so.

The new ones use 'Connect' don't they? Or was that phased out entirely due to the constant issues?

They use mp3's but its sort of "wrapped up" in Sonys OMA tag so you can't just drag and drop but it doesn't need to convert. You can even play the OMA on your comp by simply changing the tag back to .mp3 but you lose all your song info.
I have had the NW-A1000 for over a year and I love it.

Mine came with BOTH sonicstage 4 and Connect, sonicstage 4 is fine, a lot better than older versions. Personally I use Connect which is a very stable program.

AS I got my 20GIG version at £139 I shelled out for a docking station and a cool case.
