I think you're right here - BBC transmits all of its DTT stuff (on 1, 2, 3 and 4) in widescreen, but actually transmits black bars at the side where the original source is 4:3.

Other channels have a different approach however.

Maybe it's the Thomson or TV (an old Sony 29" 4:3) that's somehow converting the "small" 4:3 picture to widescreen?

What's odd is that the programme before is fine (full widescreen etc) but This Life isn't.

I've tried every extractor/converter that I can think of and it's always the same.

I think I've reached the end of the line. Looks like I can't achieve what I want to....
