I am sure that everyone else knows the answer to this but I don't understand how it works.

I have a phone (Samsung E330) on a contract with Orange. I want to get a different phone (Motorola V635) and I am looking at getting one off Ebay.

Can I just take the Sim out of my current phone and put it in a different phone?

If a phone is locked, what does that mean? Is it the phone that is locked or the Sim?

I am not a complete technophobe but I am way behind the times on mobiles.

Thanks

Yes, you are able to take the Orange SIM out of your current phone and use it in any phone you like, as long as the phone you want to use can take an Orange SIM.

In answer to your second query, it's a phone that's 'locked', not a SIM card. For example, if somebody has a phone on the T-Mobile network, the phone will be locked to T-Mobile, which simply means that a different network's SIM card (such as yours, Orange) cannot be used in the phone. It is possible to have the phone unlocked so that any network's SIM card can be used with it (however there are a small number of phones that are not unlockable). If you take a phone to be unlocked, it must be taken to an independant phone shop, as high-street shops such as The Link, Carphone Warehouse, The Orange Shop etc do not unlock phones.

To unlock your handset you can call your provider and get a subsidy unlocking pin, usually £10-£15 region.
