I brought a Philips HD DVD player this week (I have a HD tv of course) all this fuss about HD and it being amazing, I thought I was going to blown away but Im quite dissapointed

I think the sound is amazing much better than my previous DVD player but I can't really see much difference in the picture if any

I have connected using a HDMI cable and it shows as a resolution of 1080

any thought or comments

Is this just a DVD player or an HD DVD player? What's the model number?

What you are seeing is an upscaled image, not a HD image. Unless you are viewing via a high end player with decent deinterlacer/scaler you will be hard pressed to see a significant jump in quality from upscaled via HDMI and an image via RGB scart. Images from budget upscaling players are certainly nowhere near HD quality.

I didn't expect it to be HD quality but I thought I would still see some difference. I use a HDMI cable not scart

Judging from your first post it does seem to me you were drawn into the Phillips/salemans hype of what this player was supposedly capable of.

You would have probably seen better results by adding a little to your budget and going for a non upscaling player.

Have you tried the component connection? Is your TV compatible with component? You may get a better image. Try the interlaced/progressive scan options if you can.

Do u mean buying an actual HD DVD Player that plays HD DVD's.
Sorry I don't understand your 3rd paragraph, I do have an Input called AV3 Component on my TV.

No, just an ordinary player that didn't have the ability to upscale.

You should have an option of interlaced/progressive scan in the players setup menu for component connection.

Basically interlaced is two fields, odd/even, 1080i will be shown as 2 x 540 lines. 1080p will be shown as a single field of 1080 lines.

Definitely worth a go. Many of the lower priced players are a bit of a let down with their upscaling abilities, better results have been reported when connecting via the component connection.
