I don't mean to be rude, but is there a reason that you keep putting the charts on this thread? It's just it doesn't really add to the discussion about the chart show programme, nor make interesting reading, and the info about the current charts could easily be found on various chart sites should anyone need it?

Sorry to anyone who enjoys reading it, I just thought it was a bit pointless.

It appears the conversation has dried up so i suppose it keeps the thread going.

The Current Charts I have been putting on this thread cannot be found elsewhere as they are made up similar to the way The Chart show would have a different chart to the official chart but I suppose they are a bit pointless on a Classic Chart show thread so I will stop doing them. However I may put information of previous Chart Show Top Tens up as there are lots of Chart Show Top Tens from the last few years of The Chart Show which are not on Youtube or Myspace and some people might want to know about some of the songs which made the Top Ten and No1 on The Chart Show but not the official chart.

On the 1993 shows has anyone else noticed how bad the editing was some songs in the top 10 had the editing halfway through a word or sometimes they just used any part of the song rather than a piece of the chorus and sometimes it sounded completely wrong and amateurish.
frank james
14-08-2009
I've also noticed that in 1992 some of The Top Ten clips seem to run for nearly 20 seconds instead of just over 10 seconds.
The 1993 shows are beginning to have songs going straight in The Top Ten although much lower than their debut position the following day on the official chart. This seemed to continue until 1996 when songs would enter higher on The Chart Show than on the official chart the following day.

FrankJames, why don't you upload the chart show episodes you got on MySpace or YouTube or any other video sharing website. Alot of people would be interested in seeing them. Its only a suggestion
frank james

Sadly, I have only managed to get this information off of some old audio cassettes as I didn't want to waste video tape on a music show that just showed 3/4 of music videos.
Looking back now like many of us on this thread we wish we had recorded The Chart Show as many of the videos are rarely seen anywhere now.

Having just watched a Jan 1998 show on Benriggers myspace page i noticed that they gave away a "Chart Show Sweatshirt" I wonder how many were made and if anyone who stumbles across this page had one. They must be worth something. I wonder if the winner dared wear one in the street complete with large "headphones" on the front.

I won a t-shirt on a competition on Viking radio in 1992 I still to this day have never gone out in it it had Viking on the front and Sidney's record shop on the back

sorry yes I do mean jan 1988. Loving the 1988 shows some great sing along feel good 80's numbers.
razdan1974
24-08-2009
I think I remembered also the chart show also giving out merchandise such as cups with their slogans on during certain competitions. I would definitely love to have a chart show t-shirt. Although I guess its very easy to produce a t-shirt with a chart show slogan on it. I'm sure there are loads of places where you can get someone to put a chart show slogan on t-shirts, cups and other items
steveh31
04-09-2009
Ive noticed in the 1987/88 shows that some videos got full plays and almost all got 3 mins whereas in 1993 some songs like Radiohead barely received 2 mins seems quantity of videos was more important than length of quality
frank james
05-09-2009
I suppose in the 90's there were more videos to show but only an hour to show them as there were times around 1997 when you get 20 new entries a week in the Top 40 a week whereas in the 80's the charts were similar to now where songs stuck around and you only had a few big new releases to show each week.
steveh31
09-09-2009
Imagine if it was on now 4 ad breaks instead of 3 so at least two songs would have to be dropped.
frank james
10-09-2009
They would probably drop the specialist chart to make way for the adverts.
razdan1974
11-09-2009
No offence, but there is no point in having a new chart show in this age. You have the top 40 being played nearly everyday on MTV channels and then there is specialist channels that suits different musical tastes. Plus not forgetting the internet such as YouTube and other video sharing sites that provide outlets for different types of music.
The Chart Show was great for the 80's and 90's, when non commercial music was rarely played on national television. I don't mind seeing classic episodes of the chart show from the 80's and 90's, but please don't bring a new version of it. It has been tried and it failed miserably. To be honest, programmes like Top of the Pops and The Chart Show don't deserve a new comeback !!!
frank james
16-09-2009
The new Chart Show didn't do very well because it was badly done and on a minority channel. While there isn't a need for music videos on the main channels, a new chart show would be relatively cheap to make and has got to be better than the rubbish that is on ITV on Saturday mornings now. Also because music videos are cheap I have seen CH4 putting hour long blocks of music videos from 4Music recently and they also have 4Music's Top 20 on CH4 in the early hours of Thursday.
