...Does this instantly mean its in HD?

Yes, assuming it has been telecined in HD resolution.
But bear in mind that film is an analogue medium and there are several factors contribute to the overall picture quality - which is why there are such wide variations in quality between DVD movies. |

However,most BR and HDDVD purchases are pointless anyway as titles are coming out without the extras that were on the dvd. All this crap about increased capacity and they don't make use of it. So even if there was no format war,HD buying is still currently a waste of time |
