when i watch a dvd on my TV, the picture displayed is quite narrow, with black horizontal bar taking up the top half of the TV and same for the bottom half.

Why is this pls? and can i change anything so the whole screen is taken up by the picture and not a black bar.

A lot of movies are made in 2.35:1 ratio where as a widescreen TV is 16:9 ratio (as is all made for telly w/s content) and a "normal" telly is 4:3 ratio. When you are viewing a 2.35:1 ratio movie (on DVD or even broadcast) on a 16:9 or 4:3 telly then you will get the black bars, this is normal and allows you to see the full width of the movie as the director intended.

Most TV's will allow you to adjust the display to chop then ends off the picture and fill the screen in the horizontal plane but that can mean reduced picture quality and of course missing bits that occur at the ends of the frame

In simpler terms the numbers are

Movie = 2.35:1
Widescreen TV = 1.78:1
Normal TV = 1.33:1

I.e. for every cm high a screen is it needs to be 2.35cm wide to fit a movie in with no bars.

If you have a 4:3 TV upgrading to a Widescreen model is the best way to watch movies, the black bars are smaller and not really noticeable.

There should be a setting on your DVD player's setup options to tell it that your TV is a 4:3 - it may be called fullscreen. My £20 Matsui has the option so yours certainly should.

or even simpler,

many films are made in a 'very wide' screen format, wider than a widescreen TV and of course very very wide comapred to a traditional '4/3' TV.... so you still get the black lines showing as you're seeing the movie exactly in the format as it was made.

This <site> might help also clear things up.
