Which should i buy- a PSP or DS lite?
I need advice re the title.
I believe from reading threads i have searched via google this is a contentious issue- where people cannot seem to agree as to which is best. I wish to buy a portable games console to use when travelling on holiday, on planes etc.. especially when delays occur which did happen for hours on my last holiday ![]() I am not interested in using the console for playing movies, music or for viewing photos. I only want this to play games. Things i have heard about the DS Lite which i like: 1: lots of decent games. (i believe?) 2: the games are cheaper not costing a fortune 3: no game load up time - quick and more responsive than PSP 4: longer battery life 5: has protected screen 6: it is cheaper to buy Things i dont like about the DS Lite: 1: poor basic graphics? 2: small screen compare to PSP 3: I dont think i would use the touch screen function 4: what is the point of two smaller screens? 5: games are more for young children and less involving? Things i like about the PSP 1: nice large screen 2: decent detailed graphics 3: more games for adults? Things i dont like about the PSP 1:games are expensive (i believe) 2:battery only lasts a short time 3: the memory cards are ridiculously expensive (what size memory card would i need to play games?) 4: there is a delay as game loads scenes? (i would find this irritating) 5: controls are not as confortable to play? I had more or less decided to buy a DS Lite because from what i have read the DS Lite is more fun and has better games (whatever that means?) But to throw a spanner in the works i have the oportunity to buy a second hand PSP for £60.00? What should i do? ![]() Games i have enjoyed in the past on my xbox and PS1: prince of persia, tomb raider, halo, stronghold, far cry, splinter cell, syphon filter (i dont like football/sport type or tekken duals). I dont wish to play these games / titles again but at the time they were released i enjoyed them. I have always fancied Zelda but it was not available on my consoles. What do you mean you won't use the touch screen? That's the whole point of the DS.

Just had a quick look on play.com and New Super Mario Brothers costs £24.99 and the new GTA: Vice City Stories costs £27.99. I guess it depends on where you shop though. Some of the older games like Ridge Racer and Everybody's Golf (great game!) are in the platinum series now so they're cheaper and some games are about £17 from release. I found these are the games like Taito Legends, Mega Drive collection and Midway Arcade Classics though. 2. I agree the battery life is kinda short. I tend to play in short bursts so its not too much of a problem, but it might be for you. 3. Seeing as you just want to play games on the PSP a 32mb memory stick should see you right. This is enough to save games to. The PSP should come with this but if it doesn't you should be able to pick one up pretty cheap. 4. This depends on the game you're playing, some load faster than others. I'm sure someone will post the video to the wrestling game which took 7mins to load Other games like Daxter are clever, they hide the loading scenes behind door locks. As you walk up to a door to get to another part of the world you see the door lock moving, giving you the impression its unlocking itself. Even then it only takes 5-10 seconds to load. LocoRoco has very little loading times because its such a simple game.5. I've never had a problem with the controls. The little analogue nub takes a little getting used to though. I think the controls depend on the type of games you play though. I tend to play puzzle and platform games more than FPS. I've heard people say the PSP controls suck for FPS. But games like GTA:LCS and VCS seem to be ok

The psp seems to have a poor selection of games.
Also if you did use it to go on the net, it seems like it would be such a faff to type anything in, seeing as it doesnt have a touchscreen. |

I love my DS. Can't comment on the PSP, but the battery life is great, some really good games out for it, and you probably would use the touch screen. Loads of games build it in in really inventive ways. You certainly would for RPGs!

this is just rumours - but sony would have tried to surpress nintendo by launching the psp against the DS during development of their next gen consoles (ps3 and nintendo wii). However, the DS and DS lite combined sales are greater than those of the psp in Europe.
The DS is the one i would go for as Nintendo are more committed to their place in the market. The graphics might not be as good... but its a game for god's sake! |

DS by contrast has loads of games that are fun my friends son doesnt even use his for games anymore , just mainly for playing music on when hes out. No doubt the psp could have been a fantastic system but there just isnt the games for it. |

I have had both the DS and PSP , and have kept my DS. PSP was sold off. The PSP is graphically superior but i always went back to the Nintendo DS because i found the games and gameplay a lot better!!
DS Anyday!!! Wins hands down , and the battery lasts for ages!!!! |

Well i have read all your replies taking on board your comments. Thanks to you all so far.
out of the 9 replies i have received so far it seems that: 2 replies are in favour of the psp = 22.2% 7 replies are in favour of the ds lite = 77.7% I guess the answer at the moment is staring at me in the face? The ds lite is the clear winner so far. Two further questions please: Does anybody find the ds lite screen too small or a strain on the eyes? Also which games should i buy for the ds lite? (bearing in mind the games i enjoyed playing which i mentioned on my first original post.) I do fancy a decent roll playing game? Any recommendations? Last edited by manuel : 27-11-2006 at 01:24. |
