I've whittled the choice down to the following five 32 inchers:

Sharp 32JW73H (£478 @Empire Direct)
Samsung WS32V54NS (£513 @Unbeatable)
Sanyo 32WN5 (£509 @Hi Energy)
Thomson 32WR25UG (£469 @QED)
Philips 32PW6006 (£491 @Unbeatable)

All the prices inc shipping. I can't believe the difference from High Street to internet prices, some people must be getting really ripped off !

Anyway, any comments at all on any of the above??
I can't find any decent review sites that cover them.

I'm favouring the Sanyo just now cos it has auto format switching, audio out and virtual surround. and can't go that much above £500 in case anyone tries to suggest a 900 quid Sony.

Another to consider are the amount of scarts it has and whether any input RGB which is the best display for Sky and DVD players.

If you intend to add a home cinema kit in the future having audio outputs (white and red) will allow you to connect the tv to an amp.

Cannot give you any advice re the tvs. When I was looking for a tv I went to the NTL site and found the link to view Which's reports on reliability and recommendations for 24 hours for a £5. There are sites such as homecinemachoice which runs reviews on equipment which may be of help to you. If you buy a home cinema mag there should be links to websites which you can use to find reviews.

...and no panasonics? (or is this all about value for money - TAUs are brilliant but pricey).

Also to consider - how well does it handle aspect ratio switching (especially 4:3 material)? Many TVs automatically default 4:3 to nasty 'intelligent' stretchy wide modes. There was a forum on here a while ago...

Of course, you can always go wander round Comet etc and play with their TVs to see what they look like before you go spend many pounds less.

also - take a look at www.avforums.com - you should get good advice there as its a more specialised forum and very good for this sort of thing.

(presume its OK to post the link?)

I have had the Philips 32PW6006 for one year, bought from unbeatable online. I have no complaints at all, and if you are looking for big on a budget, you won't be sorry if you choose it. It has one RGB scart, one S-Video scart, and side phono's. It has none of the mentioned auto aspect switching problems, and has a full range of choices in this department. 4:3, 14:9, 16:9 are all available for letterbox images, and there is a (useless?) super wide, subtitle zoom, and of course the genuine widescreen mode.

Picture quality from my Tosh SD220, via RGB scart, is superb.

For sound I would suggest you forget tv based surround systems, and save like hell for a decent AV amp.

This tv was highly recommended in What Video & tv mag early last year, and I think it also got a decent review in What Hi-fi.

Best of luck!

Any higher end Toshiba tv set has to be included in your wish list - the connectivity of Tosh's is superb Look for component in for DVD connection (Tosh DVD players usually have this connection for output) - the picture is very very good this way.

Thanks all for the help.
I found some good advice on the AVForums site also...
seems that John Lewis will price match as long as the other company has a High Street store as well as the internet site.

The best bit is that John Lewis give a 5 yr warranty and the customer service is excellent.
I think I've decided to go with the Philips 32PW6006. It has good connections, apparently a good picture and has auto-format switching. I'll be heading into JL this weekend to try one out and request a price match. (£529 @ Robertsons, inc vat, delivery & cabinet)

Cheers,
np

cheers for the links lynx

i've read a lot of differing opinions on the 32PW6006. Seems to be some have a bad RGB problem. However, I did read about a guy who fixed the problem by going into the service menus and adjusting the contrast.
Think I'll just take the plunge and see how it goes.
I've not heard of a single set in my price range that someone doesn't whinge about !!
