Hi All. Does anyone have any views/experience of the Philips LCD screens with Ambilight? I saw some today and thought they looked quite smart but I wonder if these lights are just one more potential thing that could go wrong with a set during its lifetime?

I like mine (only two side mono effect) but the colour change in time with the onscreen action especiallyin a dark room does look good.
Asthetics aside there may be some advantage in that LCD has traditionally been weak on black levels and with this sympathic light that can offset the lack of pure black.

Thanks for those replies - anyone else? I'm trying to decide between the Philips or Toshiba or Panasonic.

Ambilight output is goverened by the primary colours used on the screen, so you get for example a green light if you are watching footy or other grass event.
During explosions you would get washes of red, yellow and white as dictated by the actual picture and the ambilight setting.
In a dark setting you would see much lower intensity light perhaps just shades of any colour on screen such as white/orange for might sources etc.

As for the hardware I can only speak for my 9986 which has two vertical strips of LED's encased in frosted cover at each end of the back panel.
They are mono were as the latest models are stereo (different colours either side) and of course you can get models which add horizontal top and bottom strips.

I don't know if Ambilight would be a major feature in a purchase decision, it may tip the balance though
