Plasma TV manufacturers join forces to take on threat of LCD TVs
CountAlucard

LCD TV sales must be biting into the sales of Plasma TVs, as Hitachi, Panasonic and Pioneer have started a joint campaign to extol the virtues of Plasma TVs over LCD TVs.

The companies have set up a website so consumers "will have the information and supportive data needed to ‘buy with confidence'."

See for yourself!

What the web site says is true, but most people can't tell the difference when comparing poorly set-up display models.

The real problem for plasma manufacturers is plasma's lack of scalability. That is what has allowed LCD to gain market share, not picture quality!

Thought the "LCD screens are manufactured predominantly by ‘third parties’ " stetement was a bit missleading... That might be true of the cheaper Aldi special unknown brand screens, but I think Toshiba, Sony, Sharp etc might not be too chuffed! Meltcity said about the lack of scalability - this is the only reason you don't really get Panaphonic, genuine Psionear and Hitarchy plasmas; which would be manufactured, predominantly by ‘third parties’...

You just know you can re-read all the "comparable to" as - "Yea... They have us there..."

In a jointly funded state of the art manufacturing plant with another coming on stream next year.
That huge mass production and continuous development is the reason why Plasma has stagnated in the boomin flat panel market even with traditional benefits at larger screen sizes.

It does seem to be a strange idea to ask the public whether they think Plasma is better than LCD. Most people don't know and aren't interested. It's fairly ludicrous to suggest that a plasma screen is sharper than an LCD. This is just obviously wrong. Resolution is mainly a function of the number of pixels I would have thought. Colours vary from TV to TV irrespective of whether it's LCD or plasma.

Canute lives. Plasma is old technology, just as LCD soon will be.

Yes but let's be honest only the none discerning amongst us or those with financial constraints would choose to watch LCD over Plasma right? I have both - however, the LCD is upstairs as a second t.v. whilst the 42" Panny Plasma has pride of place in the lounge and none of our family would want it any other way.

The bit about Plasma not necessarily using more power than LCD seems vague at best....

It all seems a bit of an odd site to me.....

and where can I get a 32" Plasma?

But on a like-for-like size plasma is generally cheaper than LCD - or at least there's very little in it.

The fact that there is more than one technology for viewing pictures is the problem - not any of the technologies themselves per see.

Given that all 3 give a similar viewing experience - at least for the majority to find acceptable - only the cheapest available will win.

The differences between all the available technologies just isn't enough for MOST people to do anything other than buy on price.

Or should I say the "perceived differences" - because HD isn't really with us properly yet.

Like the slow initial uptake of DVD, it will take a while to convince everyone of the benefits of one technology over any other.

And no - I'm not entering into the debate on which technology is the best. That's another story.
