potentially stupid question regarding ipod battery

i've got an old 20gig 3G ipod - the one with the menu button above the click wheel.

works fine and all that, but whenever i recharge, the large battery icon will show as full, and it will say "charged" on screen, but when I unplug it from the mains, the little battery power meter in the top right corner hasn't quite caught up and shows as half, or completely, empty.

it tends to catch up though, although it never really shows as totally full.

is it a problem ?. anyone had similar ?

it's mac formatted at the moment and i'm just pulling the songs off it so i can reformat it to windows and update the firmware, so maybe that'll resolve it .. but would be interested to know if anyone else has experienced anything similar ??

With my 3G iPod the battery display did what you say so i don't think it is anything to worry about. My 5G one does something similar, often showing an empty battery as soon as i start playing a video but then it catches up

Unfortunately, most rechargeable batteries are only good for around 300 charge cycles, so maybe that is the problem if it's seen good use while you've had it.
