Fair comment, it was spider, I take it back

You do tend to come across as spider's evil twin though a lot of the time, so I think I can be forgiven

What about the problems with the DVDR1000, DVDR980, & DVDR1000mk2?

Philips DVDR1000 (Kaputt)
Philips DVDR980 (Kaputt)
Philips DVDR1000mk2 ABF1613B ABFO99CS ABFO92FS

With my 3rd Philips DVD recorder on the way out which model is it to be next?.
They are great machines when they work...but I wish they would work a little bit longer.

Does anyone know where to get spares online in the uk ??
My DVDR1000 has got a ABFFDOE6 message
It done this a few months ago and i had a local shop look at it and they said it needed a new laser head. Strange thing was it worked when i got it back and has been fine until now.

After 18 months of reliable service, my Philips DVDR70 died 1 minute into a recording (DVD+RW disc) with a "Disc Error" message. It then hung on a post format for ages until I decided to power down and back on. It now won't read or write anything, as it cannot recognise any discs in the drive (including commercial DVD Videos). Discussions with Currys, Partmaster and Philips have resulted in nobody being either willing or able (parts completely unavailable) to help me.

Sony here I come...

I apologuise now for this because I am sure someone will moan. But why is this thread in the Sky+ forum when a forum exists on this website for DVD recorders etc?

Just noticed the AGE of all this. Think I'll retire.

After my Philips let me down I bought a Sony. Just over a year later it went the same way as the Philips.

I only need a simple recorder. Don't need to do any edits etc. I bought on from Aldi for just over £ 100.00 with a three year guarantee. Sweet!

You might get a free repair under extended guarantee.

I've just started experiencing a problem with my DVDR70. Been a great little machine for the two or three years I've had it. However in this last week when the unit has been powered up for several minutes it seems to have a fit when outputting images to my TV. Whether I'm playing a DVD or just watching a TV channel through the DVDR70, after a few minutes the signal to the TV starts going haywire. The picture starts scrolling vertically on the machine or jerking sideways. Becomes completely unwatchable. Only way to correct the problems seems to be a complete re-installation process. This works for a couple of hours but then the problem reappears.

Anyone have a suggestions on what the problem may be and how to fix it?

hi

ive just logged on to here in exasperation with my philips DVDR880/051 ive had it for nearly 3 years and it has been nothing but a pile of trouble!! it has been non functioning more than its functioned!! its so twitchy!! it now wont read discs properly... it will record no probs but will only read a disc with only one recording on it!! HUMPH sometimes it will play a pre recorded disc sometimes it wont! all the buttons have locked up on it both the remote and the actual dvd... it wont finalise anything... this spate of trouble started after i deleted a title on one of the discs!! im sick and tired of it!! it wont play the beginning of discs properly (of those it will play) the start are all like in freeze frame, jumpy and have bars on them! its switched itself off and had nothing on the screen (died) the tv/dvd button on the remote turns the tv off oh and the numbers of the chapters on one of my discs all went doo lally ... had like no 1,2,3 and had 2 no7 8 9 ... had to put those right then had to change the thumbnails aswell!! ... oh and philips dvd+r discs wont recognise!!! humph.. the dvd+rw discs that came with the recorder wont play... none of them are finalised!! when i load a disc i have recorded most of the time it says its an empty disc but recognises the disc type!!! Ive put it back to factory settings and made sure it hadnt gone back into dealer mode!! the upgrade disc we had a while back dvd says its unsupported... but did work when we had it!!! im off to throw dvd in fish pond and stick my head in the oven LOL
ill be back to have a read of this thread a bit later when ive climbed off the wall

regards
Phil

If its still going after 3 years then you are lucky.
But before you waste any more time or money or patience, cut your losses and buy a new one(not Philips obviously)

Ive trawled through this thread but cant seem to find an answer to my question. I want to buy a replacement for my Phillips 890 but I want to make sure that the new machine will recognise all the DVD's I have recorded over the past few years. They are all on RW+ or R+ disks. Will any machine capable of reading RW+ and R+ disks be ok or should I get another Phillips machine just in case?

Any machine should be able to play them. You will only be able to rerecord the RW's on a + recorder.
Fortunately most of the cheap recorders are +R/RW.

The new Technika recorder on sale at Tesco's looks interesting at £68 with a DV input but I haven't seen any reviews. The £68 recorder at Asda has very poor picture quality IMO.

Hope this helps.

You don't have to stick to the cheap and nasty DVD+ machines.
You can move upmarket and get a decent reliable machine from Pioneer or Panasonic.
While you won't be able to reuse your +RW discs, you can play all your +R(as long as they're finalised) and your +RW's.
The Panasonic will even record to +R if you have any left,in addition to-R,-RW and RAM

Hi!!
erm have just today been told by a very reliable source that the Phillips dvd recorders 880 (which i have) 890 and 980 all have a plastic laser mechanism which melts.. a design manufacture fault!!! so as a machine that has been sold to us as faulty... citizens advice say that .. if you are sold a machine that is faulty... ie does not arrive in satisfactory condition and for the for the purpose it was intended for and free from defects then you have a right to either a full refund of purchase price, a free repair, or a replacement by law!!! also you are entitled to compensation for any loss, damage or injury!! i have put in a claim in writing to phillips asking also to be compensated for the loss of discs i cannot finalise!!!!! also they say to send a copy to head office!! use recorded delivery for both!! and make a time limit to say when you expect a reply.. but be polite ... they are responsible to pick up your broken dvd recorder so ask them to do so!!
If anyone needs any more advice please pm me!!!

Frustrating though it must be for you, this is old news about the faulty laser mechanism. Philips have extended the guarantee and should indeed repair your machine, although if you don't get any luck then follow this method.

My DVDR880 has been repaired twice though, for the same fault.

Thanks!!! just going for a read!!!
incidentally... i have just been on the phone to phillips.. they now say that they no longer are making parts to repair the 880 i asked why and they said that a machine has to be repairable (serviceable) for 7 years!!! and as you now cant get the parts... if you ring service care.. they will log your unit it for an £81 repair but you will be sent a replacement model notably the 3305 !! havent looked at that yet tho... just reading your link!!

Phil
ps incidentally my machine is 3yrs old in april!! you have to ring and choose the option that it is under guarantee otherwise they wont listen!!

If your 880 is 3 years old and this is the first time its gone wrong I suggest you contact the Guiness Book of records, unless its been rarely used.
Philips extended the guarantee to 2 years ,but you may get lucky

Can you explain in a bit more detail what the offer is? Reading here, it seems as though you pay £81 and get a new 3305.
