Nearly. It was collected by an agent for Tesco (the company I bought it from last November), they had a look at it and said it would need to go to a Philips service center. They sent it to Belgium, then it was returned a couple of weeks later to the service agent, unrepaired. Then, they returned it to me telling me to contact Tesco. I did, sent it back to them for a replacement (they refused to do a refund) then after 2 weeks they said they would refund it as they couldn't find a replacement for me. So there you go. A lot of messing around really. I'm glad it's over.

I am glad I've found this Forum.
My Philips DVD Recorder is going back after about 5 months since I've purchased it.
I was very happy with it in the beginning especially with the RGB picture recorded directly from Sky - super picture.
It gradually started NOT showing the full Menues available around the little picture icons. Then followed jumps and freezes followed by NO DISK messages when inserting disks successfuly recorded in the past.
I am now requesting a fresh 12 months guarantee upon return of the machine to me.
At the price paid I did not expect just 3 months of use..!

I must be about the most disenchanted Philips user! I have just had my 3rd DVDR880 breakdown since I got the first one last July! The retailer Apollo has so far been very fair and replaced each machine with no quibble or charge (having first offered me the option of a refund)
They have all been replacement new machines not repairs. Should I bother asking for another one, or should I just junk all my +RW discs and start again ? !!

There is another solution, why not get a refund on the (now discontinued) and get the new DVDR70 or even the 75 which have now replaced the 880 and 890 respectively.
There dont seem to be any complaints about them. Although I suppose it is early days yet. Mine (880) was fine for about 6 months before dying on its arse. Just got it repaired and returned from philips after 3 weeks, but if it happens again I'll be getting the refund or exchanging it for the 70.
Got too many +RW and +R discs to change to -RW or RAM now.

My 880 has just died too, having served me well for two weeks short of a year. But I liked it so much that I already ordered a 75 this afternoon for delivery tomorrow. It'll tide me over until my 880 is repaired or replaced, after which I may get rid of one or I may just keep both of them busy.

I had a DVDR70 for a day. The reason I only had it for a day was that it would not record on to any of the philips DVD+RW discs I had just bought that day! I even took the discs back and bought Sony ones which had the same result-"Disc warning" followed by "Disc Error"
I ended up getting a DVDR880 which had been recalled by Philips (according to the salesman anyway). So far so good-I can record fab pictures off Sky Digital with RGB. However, the Sat record function does not work correctly. When tested, it will record the desired program via the Sky Personal Planner but if you so much as touch the Sky remote befoer it is due to record the DVDR starts up and records immediatley!! This problem has been reported by others in a +RW forum. So buying the DVDR70 does not necessarily guarantee no problems

I bought a first generation DVD recorder (at a greatly reduced price) the DVDR 1000. Worked well for a few months but the quality of DVDs recorded from my Mini DV camera via firewire was very poor, lots of blocking and digital artefacts. Eventually it started to refuse to play prerecorded discs such as Walking with Cavemen, Harry Potter etc.

As it wouldnt operate properly as a dvd player, let alone a recorder. It went back, and having been shipped off to Belguim, I was eventually given a refund after six weeks wait. I have now dumped Philips and switched to Panasonic. Well built, versatile machines, and the E50 is selling in droves. I was in PRC today. 30 E50s delivered, not a single DVDR 70 or 75 to be had. It seems word is spreading about the Philips reliability problems. The E50 can be had for £289 on the internet.

The 70 and 75 have been on sale for some time. However if you read the www.dvdplusrw.org forums dedicated to DVD+RW you will see that these machines have the problems found in the earleir models!

well Rushmore I am afraid that you are incorrect. The DVDR70 is a brand new model and has only been on sale for a couple of weeks. I should know-I had to hunt one down to get one, only to be disapointed with its reliability.

Our experience differs. That what makes life so wonderful! Sorry to hear you've got reliabitly problems already, it took my DVDr 1000 severl months to go wrong.

Hardly a ringing endorsement though! I've had six trouble free months with my DVDR890 so far... fingers crossed...

How is your DVDR890 connected to your Sky Box/Cable box? The reason I ask is that Philips advised me to cennect the VCR out scart to the EXT2 scart of my DVDR880. This doesn't seem right somehow.

Well if my DVDR880 lasts almost the full 12 months then I will take out an extended warranty on it.

No, my VCR out SCART is connected to my Philips Video Sender I have the other SCART connected to the DVDR890, which daisy chains the RGB signal straight into the TV.

My DVDR980 has given up the ghost after 14 months of perfect operation with symptoms similar to those described in this forum.

I understand from this forum that a large number of Philips Recorders have broken within the guarantee period of 1 year. However, mine obviously is now outside that period.

Has anyone had any experience with getting these machines fixed outside of guarantee?

Does anyone think there is a case to argue that these recorders have a latent design fault as so many appear to have gone wrong in the same way?

xiddi, if you're in the UK then you're entitled to have goods repaired for up to six years after purchase, depending on what the normal life expectancy for such an item would be, regardless of what the Manufacturer's Warranty says.

Remember, the warranty is "in addition to your statutory rights" and "does not affect your statutory rights" - it's usually in the text somewhere.

Thanks for the information regarding consumer rights. It looks like I am within my rights to get the vendor to repair the item if the fault is 'inherant'.

For the time being, I've written to Philips to see what they have to say about it.

I had a slight scare last night with my 890 (ironically not long after proclaiming my satisfaction so far..).. the player was having problems reading disc four of the 24 Season 1 box set... It would then say "No Disc".. I think its due to the discs being flakey.. Then again the disc was easily picked up with my PS2....

Id better see if I can find my warrenty...

Well there's no harm in asking Philips, but outside of the warranty period you have no claim against them. Your contract is with the company that sold you the goods, not the company that made them.

I mailed him and he sent back this: AKI 868, these really are the latest, I have imported these as samples, which is why I am selling them at cost, to see what they sell like, if they sell well I'll be importing them in bulk with full warranty.
Sound suspicious to me as i thought a machine that could do all this would be a very hot topic.
Any thoughts??
