Recording on video to playback on a widescreen telly
I will shortly be buying a widescreen tv (finally!) once my new sofa arrives (need to wait cause not enough space at the moment with a massive sofa and 2 chairs!)
2 questions Firstly the TV I'm considering buying is the JVC AV-28R250EKSC, seen on Comet website for £600, seems very good value for the price, 28" (please don't tell me I should have 32" - I measured the alcove its going in and its already going to take up much of the space in a not very large living room!), Dolby pro-logic, 2 external speakers, very good review on the What TV&Video website - anyone got this who can comment on it, any good features, how it handles 4:3 pictures etc Secondly - my main question....I want to tape Tigerland from Sky Movies Widescreen this week, along with a couple of other films I noticed were on, so that I can watch them on the widescreen. Is it simply a case of setting the Sky digibox to 16:9 mode and recording it like that and then playing back? |

On playback your video may not send the signal to your new TV to switch it to the correct mode, but it will be just a case of manually selecting the correct 16:9 mode. |

It's also worth checking out the AV-28R25 which is the same set as the AV-28R250 and is available from many dealers. It doesn't have the surround speakers supplied but it does have a better looking stand. If you can find it significantly cheaper you can pick up the surround speakers separately.

Hopefully the video will do the job as its a new video (I realise thats doesn't necessarily mean it will!), will just have to see what happens! Can't wait - wish they'd hurry up and tell me when my sofa is going to be delivered then I can get the telly ordered! Still I'm having loads of fun researching tellys! GaryB - thanks for that as well, I'll have a look...any idea how it deals with 4:3 pictures? I saw a widescreen (Phillips I think) in Dixons that had Sky Sports News showing and it was stretched to fit the screen yet the picture didn't look at all distorted even with all the text! - I was very impressed, unfortunately that was a 32" and was about £1100! |

Most widescreen TVs deal with 4:3 pictures in pretty much the same way. They leave the centre reasonably untouched and stretch the edges. This minimises the effect of the stretching and leaves the picture looking reasonably natural. The only time it does look a bit odd is when the camera pans horizontally such as in football or you have horizontal scrolling graphics. JVC call it Panoramic Scan, others have their own names for it.

I don't want to throw a spanner into the works, but I think all the movie channels transmit their films encoded with Macrovision. So although they will record in anamorphic widescreen & play back at the correct aspect ratio on a widescreen TV you may have problems with the quality of the recording. Usually the image brightness will rise & fall randomly & make the recording un-watchable. Cables are available to eliminate this, although I've never used one myself. One type is available here Macrovision Scart cables Good luck

There are no problems taping from any of Sky's movie channels. However, I cannot vouch for the Box Office movies, I suspect you cannot copy these.

Can we please not turn this thread into a discussion on Macrovision as I realise that the mods don't allow discussion of ways around it and I have no intention of looking for ways around it - only asking about recording from Sky Moves Premier Widescreen. |

Sky Movies don't use Macrovision, Sky Box Office usually does.

You're better off watching 4:3 progs in 4:3 mode, undistorted.
Trust me, it's the best way. You're not losing anything and you haven't wasted any money if some of the screen isn't being used from time to time. |
