Sky One picture too big for my TV Screen

Sorry if this is too simple a question for this forum but I am not quite sure where to pose it.

I caught up with the first three episodes of LOST last night having videoed them.

It doesn't seem to matter what format I choose from the ones availabe to me (wide, zoom, 14:9, 4:3 or smart I think) I cannot see the whole picture. This only became blindingly obvious when the cast names started appearing. I lose the beginning of the names displayed on the left and the end of the names on the right.

Can anyone explain why it should be and does anyone know if I can do anything about it?

Many thanks.

By the sounds of it you have changed the screen settings on the TV, but what about on your Sky box and/or VCR? You want it all to match up ideally.

Are you sure your Sky box is in 16:9 mode?

If you've got a non-widescreen TV, you either need to set the picture format to 4:3 on your Sky box (this will give you a full screen picture, but you will lose the edges of the picture - this is normal however) or to 4:3L (this will put the Sky box in letterbox mode, so you'll see the full widescreen picture, but with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

If you've got a widescreen TV, it's easy. Just set your Sky box to 16:9 and enjoy Lost in all it's widescreen glory!

FYI - In this country, TV pictures have a 'safe-zone' which isn't used for graphics/text/DOGs etc at the edge of the picture so that people without widescreen TV can see all the graphics. However, I think in the US they don't use safe-zone's because widescreen programmes are broadcast in letterbox on analogue or in HD widescreen on digital - I'm sure someone can confirm if this is correct
(Sorry if I've explained that badly!)

What type of TV have you got?

You almost certainly have your TV set to 16:9 and your box is set to 4:3, I bet everyone looks really fat.

Set your box to 16:9 (scart control on) and your TV to 4:3, then when Sky changes channels you will see everything in its proper aspect ration and you won't lose the sides.

EDIT: for playing from the VCR you will then have to manually select widescreen for new recordings, your current recordings are 4:3 so you will need to watch those in that mode for the correct aspect.

Thanks for all replies. I don't actually have Sky but Telewest Cable - I'll have a look at what settings I can get through that.

It's a Sony Trinitron Widescreen KV-32FX65U and is quite a few years old now.

check the box setting matches the shape of tv you have. So if your tv is a square type, put the box into 4:3. If your tv is a widescreen, put the box into Widescreen 16:9.

If your tv is Widescreen, it most likely also has an Auto setting, so once you have changed the box setting, the tv should auto switch the setting for you (provided you have a direct scart connection from the box to the tv).

Telewest - to set your TW box up for a 4:3 screen: -

Blue button, then Settings & Services, Display and Audio, then right / left arrow to select the setting you want.

On a 4:3 I would choose 4:3 letterbox - but you can choose just 4:3 if you want. 4:3 won't give you the whole picture, but why not experiement - or even change the setting according to your needs while your viewing - it takes seconds to change from one to the other.

He has a widescreen TV, if he sets the Telewest box up using the method described by RobAnt (only setting 16:9) then the Sony will autoswitch when set in 4:3 mode.

The problem was the Telewest box was set for 4:3 not that he wanted to set it for 4:3.

Interesting to me that you should have mentioned this set as I am thinking of buying one for £299.99 to tide me over for about two years until technology settles down and I will then be able to view football on a LCD or SED without there being any motion blur. My twelve year old Panny is losing its colours gradually and is on its way out so it is either a LCD or a stop gap Crt. How has your Sony treated you and does it show football well, without any motion blur?

I know that your set is 64kg

Sorry I am way off topic, but I could not resist this question as I had no-one to turn to.

I have this TV and it's excellent for football as long as the signal is ok. This means ITV football is crap but no TV on earth can cope with ITV for football.

There is no motion blur at least to my eyes, but as I said ITV football is full of pixellation around the players as they move.

I'm thinking of upgrading to a plasma rather than an LCD.

Noted, but the same principle applies - use the setting appropriate for your TV : - 4:3 - 4:3 Letterbox, Wdescreen will set the output for a 16:9 TV.

4:3 with do the equivalent of Pan & Scan (without the Pan bit).

We have had it quite a few years now and it has done pretty well. The sound is not as good as a JVC TV we bought a couple of years later but that is probably not that important to you. It is a hulking great brute of a TV though and looks pretty dated. I would love to buy something new but will wait until we move house in a few years time. We're not really footie fans but have watched quite a few England games (and plenty of Rugby) very happily. It cost us about £900 about eight years ago I think - I don't know if I would pay as much as £300 now though.

Thanks to everybody for their answers - I am female and technologically challenged I'm afraid.

I have changed my Telewest Box to 4:3 letterbox format and will find out if it works when I record LOST again on Sunday evening.

I'll also show my husband your replies - it might mean more to him than me.

Thanks once again.

No, change your Telewest box to 16:9 (widescreen), you have a 16:9 TV. 4:3 letterbox is for display widescreen on a 4:3 TV (with bars top and bottom).

I know it will that's why I confirmed what you said except for the final selection. I think you must have misread my post, looking back at it, it could have been clearer.

Bob, have you watched football on it through Sky, as that will be my main source? How would you describe the sound. Thanks a lot.

Football on Sky (Sky Sports) is very good as is BCC usually although it can vary. ITV is not very good (esp ITV2 etc) and suffers a lot of pixellation but I think all TVs will show this unfortunately.

The sound is ok - nothing special, about what you'd expect really from this sort of set.

I have the TV installed now. They reduced it to £265.00 and set it up for me. It is very good, but I am going to take a while getting used to the brighter colours because my old Panny (On tip now) had faded very badly after twelve years loyal service.

Can you tell me how to get rid of this from off the screen. Tried everything without success. It is the word DIGI and and also an arrow pointing through a circle. All in green.

Also, if you would be kind enough, can you share with me your favourite settings, as I have a feeling that you have yours spot on.

These are my present settings:

Picture Mode - Personal
Screen Mode - Smart
Contrast - 10cm
Brightness - 5.75cm
Colour - 5cm
Sharpness - 7cm

Any other configuration suggestions?

Thanks,
Emrys Davies.

I have managed to remove those images from off the screen. Football match on at the moment and I like what I see so I am a happy bunny.
