OSD flicker
johntres
30-11-2006
Just got a new 5800 160Gb.

I am noticing a lot of flicker with the OSD, particularly in the default EPG and the Menu.

For example, flicker is very bad with the channel name (e.g. 'BBC 1') at the top of the EPG. This is black text on bright yellow background. Also there is a lot of flicker with the white lines on the blue background in the menu.

I have a good quality RGB scart connection, which is correctly configured as RGB is the Toppy, to an RGB scart on a Sony CRT (KV28LS35).

TV picture doesn't seem to show the same flicker.

version details:

system id: 456
loader version: C5.14
device version: V5.3.35
software version: TF-NPT 5.13.26
hardware version: v1.00
last update: Sep 19 2006

cheers for any help,

I take it that this OSD flicker is not normal - i.e. not a common problem for other owners?

I can't say I've ever noticed any flicker myself to be honest. If you are willing to experiment with TAPs then it might be worth dowinloading the trail version of ImproBox to see if that makes the OSD look better on your set-up, it's a vast improvement over the defaults. You have to pay a small price for the full version but it's well worth the money in my opinion.

Yeah, I get quite a bit of flicker in the native Topfield menus. Not so much of a problem for me because I use MyStuff, so I rarely encounter the horrid sky blue and yellow colour scheme.

But I think in general that there is a problem on at least some Toppys whereby the RGB signal is somehow overamplified (I'm not technical so I may be talking rubbish here) - because OSD screens consisting of all white or all light colours seem to be excessively bright, compared to similar OSD elements generated by other AV devices. And I can hear a slight buzz, cross interference into the audio channel perhaps, when these dazzlingly bright screens are displayed by the Toppy.

I didn't get a chance to try the MyStuff TAP. I decided to return the box to Turbosat to get a replacement.

Interesting to hear that there might be a problem with RGB on some Toppies. This would certainly explain my problems with flicker.
