37"-42" flatscreens - cheap but good?

Well, my old 28" Matsui widescreen has finally bitten the dust after about 10 years good service. So we need a replacement, and a bigger one too - we've got a much larger living room these days.

We reckon 37" to 42" is about right - 42" might be a bit big, but there's a lot of choice at that size.

Requirements are actually quite low. It doesn't need to have a DVB tuner at all and in theory it doesn't need to be HD Ready - it won't have an HD source until my TiVo explodes and I'm forced to move to Sky HD.

LCD slightly preferred over plasma, but not by enough to make a difference if the price was right!

I see Argos are currently doing a Wharfedale 42" LCD for £699 (LCD42720HDF) - that's pretty much the kind of price range we'd like, but it does seem a little too good to be true... anyone seen one in the flesh?

Anyone got any advice? What brands should I be looking at, and where can the bargains be found? And is it worth hanging on until the January sales start?

Hi,

Suggest you try out DigitalDirect, - save £'s.

Buy a respected make (Wharfdale - they make great speakers don't they, not great LCD's).

42" if you possible can.

Yes of course HD ready, and most now come with a digital tuner. If not you'll be sorry in 2 or 3 years.

720p/1080i is good enough. 1080p - only if you want HD or Bluray DVD

If you want a good quality set, I can recommend the Toshiba 37WLT66 - excellent picture and sound quality, good array of different connections, built in freeview, and looks quite nice too. Digital Direct are showing it on their homepage for £853.91. Almost certainly well worth the extra £150 over the Warfedale to be honest.
