Simple TV/DVD connection question

Hello I'm new to the forum and, as you'll gather from this question, I don't really have a clue what I'm doing with my new stuff! I have recently bought a Sony LCD TV (KDL-32V2000) which came with a Sony DVD/Surround sound system (DAV-DZ111) and I have also got a Humax 9200T. The question I have is what is the best way to connect them all? At the moment I have the Humax connected to the TV by Scart and connected to the surround sound by audio cables which seems fine. However, the Surround was connected to the TV by scart but when I played a DVD I was still getting sound of the channel the TV was tuned to from the TV speakers. I asked at about this at Comet and they talked me into buying component video cables which I connected last night and took away the scart. This didn't work until I reconnected the scart. So do I have to have component video and scart connected or should I have just got a better scart cable and not wasted £40 on the component cables? Apologies for such a rambling but basic question - HELP!

Does the surround sound system come with an amplifier?

If so, it should have an optical/coax connection (if not both).

Connect your DVD player to the amp via coax or optical (Audio). Your DVD Player will have these connections too.

Connect the DVD Player to your LCD via SCART to the RGB Scart port on the TV (Picture).

I presume your surround system comes with 5 speakers?

Be sure and turn the TV volume down fully, and use the speakers as your main audio source.

Do you have SKY or what form of TV viewing service do you have?

What is a Humax exactly?

Connect the DVD/surround via scart to TV scart socket AV1.
(you could use the component cable in lieu of the scart for this if you like. Try the picture using each to see if you can tell the difference. If not, get the £40 back and stick to the scart!).

Connect Humax PVR (TV scart) to TV AV2.

Hopefully, both AV1 and AV2 on the TV will accept an RGB signal (better picture). We'll come back to this in a mo.

As your DVD will give sound through your 6 speaker set up by default, you only need to connect the speakers up and play a disc to get sound and picture. Turn the TV sound right down and enjoy the 5.1 sound from your surround system.

To route other sound sources through the sound system (TV plus a VCR or the like) just connect a phono red/white (left/right) lead from the back of the TV to the 'AUX' input on the surround unit. When watching all inputs other than DVD choose AUX and set the surround unit to 'Dolby Pro Logic II' to give you a pretty goood surround sound from your Humax.

Right, RGB. This is a better quality signal than standard 'video' and you need to set this option on in both your DVD/surround unit and in your Humax. Visit the 'video settings' to find it.

Good luck, this is far simpler than it sounds...........

Sorry I've taken so long to get back and say thanks for all of your help - for some reason my computer had a problem with displaying the threads but it seems to be sorted now so, once again, many thanks. I've done as you suggested and connected the DVD to the TV with component cables and it does seem to be a fantastic picture (although I could be just convincing myself! ). I'll now go and have look at the PVR settings and make sure it's set to RGB; I had read the mauals and seen that it could be set in various ways but nowhere did it say why you would or should set it one way or the other so thanks for the explanation.

I will drag myself into the 21st century one way or the other!

Good advice from Scorpio - you may wish to try the Component cables in place of the Scart-RGB from the DVD/Surround Amp to the TV as this is an even better video quality format.

The sound will have to come from the TV Audio Out (RCA) connections to the 'AUX' inputs (RCA) on the surround unit using phono cables.
