I was looking forward to watching It Takes Two at half six this evening when the phone rang while I was setting up my video tape. I was half-expecting a call from someone I know when suddenly a female voice was telling me that she was calling from the BBC It Takes Two programme.
The first time I saw this thread was on Saturday. I don't claim to be a Strictly buff in terms of knowing statistics or remembering dress colours, so I ruled myself out of the quiz. I was very much tickled though by the thought of showing up on the people's verdict. There are a few male forumites around here, but how many would really want to put themselves forward on national TV in the name of Strictly? Still, amused by the thought, I put down my name and kind of forgot about it, believe it or not.
There was definitely something surreal about watching Claudia greet her audience on the TV screen and discussing the show with someone at the same time on the phone. But I thought it was great to chat to someone who was actually from the show. I shall call the BBC staff member Lady L as I don't know whether she wishes to be mentioned on here. Lady L proceeded to ask me about whether I was a fan of Strictly. I said that I was a fan and that it inspired me to learn how to dance ballroom. From there I mentioned the fact that I'd gone to watch the professionals perform in demonstrations, as well as having social dance classes with Karen Hardy. It was also pertinent to pass on the fact that my dance teacher appeared on the People's Verdict last year as well.
She asked me whether I have any favourites. For the two people who are not already aware of my allegiance, I am very much a Mark and, especially, a Karen fan. Those who think I'm jumping on the bandwagon can look back to this time last year on this forum when I was extolling the virtues of Ms Hardy's partnership with Bill Turnbull. To be honest I babble a bit when I talk. Writing is easier for me because I can sanitise my thoughts so they appear more coherent on the page.
Lady L then asked me if I had any comments or criticisms about last week's performances. I joked that I'm a bit like Len Goodman. I prefer to see the positive aspects in the performances. Although people might not agree with me, I also happened to think that Emma and Darren's Paso was really fiery and dramatic. Matt's Quickstep was great as well. These were the performances that I picked out off the top of my head. Admittedly, Mark was criticised by the judges for his Foxtrot. Personally, I couldn't see what exactly was wrong with it - that's down to my ignorance rather than bias. However, I said that if the judges have a dancing background then to an extent they should know what they're talking about.
Maybe I've divulged too much information and have put my place in jeopardy! As far as I know, my appearance is not guaranteed. I might hear from them in a couple of days. In fact, after having written all of this, don't be surprised if I end up floating face down in a river of custard somewhere ...
Suddenly, Lady L appears. She pulls a lever and a hole opens up below Estilolibre's feet. He disappears flailing into the abyss, screaming "Vote Mark and Karennnnnnnnnnn ..!"
