thinking of getting a 1gb or 2gb flash based mp3 player, what would you guys recommend, One with a built in battery or that uses a AAA or even a AA (even though they seem to be rare)?

for me built in, saves buying batteries. but with recharge ones, if you are not near a plug or pc you cannot change, depends on you really

It's up to you, if your batteries run out you have to go and buy new ones. Personally I couldn't be bothered, I just attach mine to my PC (my player has built-in batteries) and it charges up.

Unless of course you buy a set of rechargeable betteries. That would be a better idea than buying new batteries all the time. But personally, I'd get built in ones.

Rechargables are annoying though.

Check what the suggested life is, then knock a 1/3 off it. If that still offers enough runtime for you then a built in battery is the best choice. If it has Li-ion batteries then even better - they are better kept topped up - just whack it on charge every night.

With most (all?) devices that can be charged by USB, a powered USB hub will charge them with the PC off.

one advantage of AA/AAA batteries is that if you do lots of exotic arse end of nowhere holidays, you can probably still find somewhere that sells batteries, but a powerpoint that you have a plug for may be trickier. This is probably more relevant for cameras (not being able to listen to music is one thing, but not being able to take photos of said exotic arse end of nowhere is another matter), but I've started so I'll finish...

For normal everyday use, unless you need to listen for really long periods, I'd go for inbuilt rechargable every time. Of course, if you only have a usb charger (i.e. ipod), that is a lot less useful than a mains charger...

I prefer AAA. I have one and use rechargeble batteries. The advantage is that if the battery runs out then you can easily put a new one in. Whereas with built-in if it runs out, you have to wait until you are at your pc so that you can charge it.

So it kind of depends on the individuals needs. Basically if you are going to be around with access to a computer then buying a player with an internal battery would be good if not something that will take AAAs.
