I think it's because he feels like the village has turned against him after he told the police about the circumstances of Alice's death.

I thought Ashley was a forward thinking "Trendy" vicar when he first appeared in Emmerdale. He seems to have lapsed over the last couple of years...Bring back Rev Donald Hinton I say

Trendy vicar He is a sort of PC Vicar, the type that are too timid to upset people by talking about God. He has always been an amateur social worker. ( Not that I have anything against trained social workers )

The Rev Tray is the worst sort of vicar.

He needs to find God, rediscover his vocation, get back on the path of righteousness, be sympathetic towards his parishioners, be visible when there's a crisis in t'village, be seen on a sunday administering to his flock and basically do some vicaring.

And here ends my sermon

His problems started after Bernice left him, until then he was quite forward thinking. Then he had an affair with Louse that caused him to spend even more time in the Woolie, when that fizzled out and he found Laurel it looked like things were looking up for him, but because of his past errors of judgement (divorce from Bernice, affair with Louse) Bishop George was concerned about his judgement, this was compounded by members of his flock complaining to the Bishop about his conduct. He was offered a different parish, an inner city one which would have broadened his outlook, but in the end turned it down because of Laurel. All this pressure ground him down a lot, this was then pushed to the limit by the arrival of Ethan, who was there initially not only to learn from Ashley but also to keep an eye on him and report to the Bishop. Ethan was, at this time very serious and conservative and looked down on Ashley's laid back style of vicaring. The fact that Ethan then fell for Laurel and tried to split them up and ruin Ashley's career also led him to the position he is in today. The arrival first of his neice, who was troublesome and then of his father, who he has long term issues with over the death of Ashley's mother continued his downfall. The straw that broke the camel's back was him betraying the trust of Sam Dingle over the death of Alice.

In summation, The Reverend Ashley Thomas has made a lot of mistakes over his time in the Parish of Emmerdale and Robblesfield, which combined with a very complex and troublesome private life has severly compromised his position in the village and caused his parishoners to lose any faith in him. My recomendation would be for Reverend Thomas to be relocated to another parish, ideally under a more experienced and succesful vicar to try and work through his issues, ideally this would be in a place with a higher population so that there is little chance of him alienating people by favouring others', something that members of his parish have complained about. It is very disappointing that a vicar with Rev. Thomas' experience and time in one parish should have ended up in the position he is in now.

Please note that since his time in the village of Emmerdale, he has had one church and one vicarage gutted through fire.

Is he on his third vicarage now? The first one (where he lived with Bernice) was sold off because the church said it was too big and expensive or something..... then he bought Zoe's old cottage which got on fire and now he has Simon's old house. Still makes me laugh that Kathy's Diner is now the church..... what happened to Erics flat that used to be upstairs, is it still there?

Please note that a copy of my interim report on the conduct and effectiveness on the Reverend Ashley Damien Thomas has been forwarded to Canterbury.

I am afraid that Bishop George has had enough chances to sort out the problem parish of Emmerdale, it has gone beyond that now. Do you know the crime rate of Emmerdale far outstrips that of Leeds?

I have always thought the actor who plays Ashley is wasted in Emmerdale, good as he is. I wanted him to be the Doctor in Doctor Who (before Tennant took over), he's a bit quirky looking and reminds me of Tom Baker.

He should been moved on years ago.

The fact is that the Rev Tray has the softest job in Christendom. In real life there is no way that a vicar would be responsible for a hamlet of a couple of dozen people. As for giving him an assistant.....
