Anyone frequent the in-store cafe in Tesco? Noticed that many are being rebranded as Costa Coffee and others are now being managed under a franchise arrangement which apparently means they don't give Clubcard points anymore.

My local Tesco (CORSTORPHINE, EDINBURGH) is one of the latter and has gone to the dogs. The choice of food on offer has been drastically reduced and what is left is usually over heated and unappetising. Simple things like toasted sandwiches are always sold out and they won't sell you a cooked breakfast or even a bacon roll after mid day. The place is an absolute midden (ENV HEALTH OFFICERS PLEASE NOTE) and the staf are surly and sour faced. Needless to
say I have stopped going!

Has anyone else had similar experiences?

I walked out of my local Tesco resturant about 6 months ago after having a Sunday cooked breakfast that consisted of burnt or raw items, haven't eaten there since, my local ASDA is now a McDonalds (wouldn't eat there anyway) and as for Sainburys, they never seem to know when they are going to be open or closed, pity as nowhere else for a cooked breakfast or quick lunch has a free car park, just as well make your own at home.

Yes, my sister arranged to meet me in her new "Costas" which I assumed would be a small, cosy place where there was at least a slim chance of hearing one another. Little did I realise it was slap bang in the middle of a completely manic, noisy Tescos. What a relaxing atmosphere. Sitting facing the "ambience" of long queues and chaotic checkouts, with the really bright harsh fluorescent lighting blinding us!

yes I know Tesco outsourced the cafes a few years back, and quite frankly it was alot better before, hadn't heard anything about Costa being involved.

also I think Sainsburys has done the same, since you cant use credit cards in the store cafe/resturants

Sainsbury's customer restaurants are all done in house. Only staff catering (ie: staff restaurant) is contracted out (Compass group - Eurest). You can use credit cards to pay at most customer restaurants.
The only customer catering facilities which are not operated by Sainsbury's are the stores that have Starbucks concessions in them.

are you sure, cos I went to Sainsburys in Spalding about two weeks ago, and they didn't accept credit cards,

McDonalds in ASDA? and Starbucks in Sainsburys? when did all this start happening?

It seems that as part of a concerted cost-cutting effort, Tesco are surely but surely outsourcing all their cafes to Costa, Sainsburys to Starbucks and ASDA to McDonalds. I guess it makes sense - leave it to those who know the business.

Certain, I'm a manager at Sainsbury's and have been to my fair share of stores on training excercises.

As for Starbucks concessions, the larger stores have had them for quite some time now.

*Joe* does seem like you know what your talking about, just seemes my experince has been the opposite.

as to outsourcing good or bad, well I know my local Tesco restaurant was better before the out source, and we do really need ANOTHER Costas?

ASDA & McDonalds, well that happens in WalMart

The cafe in our local Tesco still allows smoking- so I won't go near it.

I've never actually understood why supermarket cafes are so popular anyway. Whenever I go to a supermarket I want to get my stuff and get out as soon as possible. I certainly don't want to sit down and have my dinner there.

I quit using our Tesco when the cafe was re-fitted yet again, its a franchise, rubbish food and they expect you to clear the table afterwards, yah right I would! I now use Morrisons its the best.

This also happened with Borders (bookshops). When they first launched their UK operation they had really good cafés which served decent coffee and snacks and felt like they were part of the shop. Then they outsourced them to Starbucks and the quality went down and the atmosphere became just like any other Starbucks.

If I want to go to a cafe, I'll go to a cafe! Can't see the attraction of a cafe in a supermarket, the whole ambience is wrong. Costa Coffee near me is really nice, lots of little "nooks" where you can take your coffee and read your paper in privacy, and the coffee's great - also not generally frequented by NCT mothers with screaming children!

WRONG

I used to be a sales rep covering Sainsbury's in Scotland. None of the restaurants took credit cards!

I don't like eating in tescos, I wouldn't feel comfortable eating a meal in a busy place like that.

When was this?? Back 'in the day' maybe. But most customer restaurants at Sainsbury's are on the same REPOS system as the main store.

Sainsburys/Starbucks? ASDA/McDonalds? I wonder if the cafes the different supermarkets sign up in anyway reflects the type of customer they attract?

Costa coffee do the best mochachinos.

My local Tesco is still a tesco cafe and the food is lovely.... way better than Asda's frozen microwave'd crap, Asda's breakfast used to be great now with, I'm guessing budget cuts etc, it's just went downhill, the food really is bad!

Thoughts of Lidl and a hot dog van outside come to mind
