Am I the only one who really doesn't like them, particularly the "comedy grandmother"?

I'm all in favour of new characters and I'm sure they'll develop just fine but the comedy aspect seems to be far too forced.

With all the Murders/ Affairs going on in a generally depressing Eastenders, I think the comedy aspect is a good thing. It is slightly forced, but Eastenders needs more characters such as the Grandmother, Jim, Patrick to keep the humour while other characters develop major storylines and since there isn't many big ones at the moment, then thats why there might be a bit too much comedy.

I like the two younger members of the family. The grandmother is too much like Ethel for my taste. Would anyone really eat a big cake with 'happy birthday Phil' iced onto it without checking?

I like Jim and Patrick (esp Patrick) as long as they keep it believable and don't go OTT.

Yeah, Jim and Patrick are pretty good for the comic relief (well, them and Jamie's funeral, the little runt). Nana Moon's character is contrived and very badly-written, a bit like *THAT* restaurant scene last week. Have they got a script-writer in on work experience from school by any chance???

I hated Jim with a passion when he first joined the cast but think he's mildly amusing now - particulary with Patrick who is great. Perhaps "Nana Moon" will develop nicely. But I agree, she is an Ethel clone at the moment (Ethel used to drive me nuts). And yes, the departure of Jamie made me cry real tears ... of laughter and joy! How a "man" who looks like a 13 year old boy can be a sex symbol is beyond me. He looks much better without the floppy hair though still not remotely my type!

I find the humour in characters like Kat, Ricky and Phil's mad nanny (for example) much better than the clowning of Barry and Nana Moon's daftness ... does she have a name or is it just Nana?!

She's old, a little dotty and forgetful.
Of course it would happen, and does.
Unless you've experience of what elderly people can do, you
really wouldn't believe some of the tales.
Eating cake like that is positively mild.

I do live in the real world, thanks. Are you saying she's got mild alzheimers or just that she's old? Being old or even forgetful wouldn't make you fail to see Happy Birthday in old letters across a cake. If she's supposed to have alzheimers then that's actually not funny and they should treat it as a serious issue.

I think it was suppose to be funny...its light hearted soap drama.
Maybe she has poor eye sight. It doed fail with age. I worked in a lot of old peoples home and age effects them all in different ways. I could tell hundreds of stories like the one with the cake.

i think the Moons are great, particularly Alfie. From his first appearance he was fantastic and watching him now feels like he's been there for ages. I think the whole family bring something new and fun to EE

He must be good, I'm starting to fancy him. Shame about his taste in shirts though.

I agree, his first appearance on the square was great. He's a good character and without him, it would be just boring.

I won't tell anybody if you don't!

Mind you, I saw on another site that somebody fancied Peter Barlow, so I'm not COMPLETELY off my rocker!

Oh Dear God!

Since we're being honest here I'd also like to confess that I have a HUGE crush on Ricky Butcher as well.

He's not bad looking actually - bit young for me though. But would I prefer him to Barry ..... difficult one!

I quite like Alfie, suppose its the 00's answer to Grant from the 90's and Den from the 80's.

When I first heard Shane Richie was coming into EE's, I thought he would be crap cos I cant stand the bloke. But I actually think he's a really great character. He seems like he's been there for years and you cant actually imagine him not being in the show, so he must be doing a great job.

I'm not a Shane Ritchie fan either but am now able to forget "who he is" and am fairly convinced by Alfie. Still don't like the grandmother though, and Spencer leaves me cold.

I read somewhere that Ritchie is not happy with the way the character is developing and won't renew his contract beyond the initial 6 months. I actually think that would be a shame as Alfie has potential - a landlord who presumably is NOT going to get caught up in the criminal underworld (like Den, the Mitchell brothers, Steve Owen etc.) ... but beyond his likeable rogue and criminal past, he ISN'T really a rounded character as yet.

But then again, when the Slaters first came to the square, Little Mo was an irritating doormat and Kat was a slapper you'd feel no sympathy for. Look at them now!

Same sentiments here - whatever he did before vexed me but he's got into the role well. The episodes with him n Kat and this week when Peggy confronted him clinched it for me. I think he'll do well and I look forward to the - rumoured - Alfie n Kat romance.
The icing on the cake was reading that Steve McFadden can't stand him and has been in a huff coz Shane is so popular with the rest of the cast. Sad sod , even worse than his character
