Battery-Free MP3?

Any advice on this one would be much appreciated

I am looking for a basic MP3 Player with specific requirements...

I need a low (~128mb ish) capacity MP3 Player that can get power from an USB port while *still* able to playback via 3.5mm jack...

I want one that can always be plugged into a PC to get its power and remain in a playback mode, outputting to headphones.

If anyone knows of such an MP3 player please share!!!

Many thanks

Mike

Forgive my stupidity but what would be the purpose of a device that is permanently connected to your computer but is mimicing features that are built into that computer? It's not as if the device has large storage or anything. Why not just play music on your computer? The way you describe it your computer is just acting as a fancy power brick.

Thanks for your reply... Yeah I should have seen that question coming...

We have a Panasonic phone system where I work with awful built-in hold music. There is the option to connect a 3.5mm input for our own hold music/message.

To feed the music using a CD Player would mean the CD would have to be spinning on loop 24/7 - not the ideal solution. Unfortunately the company who deal with our IT systems will not allow music to play off of our server (which is less than a metre away from our phone system), however they have okayed plugging a USB MP3 player into the front to draw power.

So I was hoping to plug an MP3 player in the server and run a 3.5mm to 3.5mm lead to the phone system PBX.

Hope that makes sense, and if anyone can help it would be much appreciated...

Plus what is the point of a 128MB player? They can store hardly any songs. Unless of course you rip them at 64kbps and that sounds awful. Get a decent player and use the battery provided.

Well, even with what you've said, why do you need to get power for the device from the server? Surely you can just use an iPod or any other player and plug it into the mains via its own power supply? Unfortunately you've get very specific requirements and I don't see many companies making players like that due to the limited market.

Perhaps this will do the job...

mp3 Music On Hold player.

Though close your eyes when you look at the price

But on the upside it is at least totally self contained and designed specifically for the purpose.

Wow. Only a muppet would buy that. Heck you can get 40GB players for that price.

Why not get an old iPod, like a 2/3rd gen, and leave it plugged in all the time?

You can get cheap, reliable 1GB players everywhere now - even Currys.

I'd go for something like this: Nickel MP4

I've gone one of those. It's very robust, it's cheap, and it'll play different loop modes, even when charging on USB.
