Shocking realisation!
I just saw a clip from a 1994 episode of corrie....and im completely shocked.
compared to the sets nowadays they look a million times more realistic. as the years have gone on the sets for corrie emmerdale and eastenders look so false its completely takes away from the realism....they are starting to look like pantomines. anyone agree |

Yep, Corrie is a mess. The "railway" bridge that goes over the chippy and behind the Rovers is shameful... What a cock up that is.

The sets in Corrie haven't ever been that realistic. Looking back through old TV Times, where the critics may have been kind even back in the 1960s viewers noticed things and wrote in.

They've probably had to cut the budget to accommodate the number of episodes that are churned out, not to mention paying the wages of the bloated cast size.

I know, it says dont take pics but ive got loads and a vid of Ken walking down the street!
Go outside the studio gates, most of them are lovely! Except Les who I found a bit rude! Even if they dont stop in their cars most of them smile or wave (Debra Stephenson and Bev Callard waved to me)! I got my pic took with a few and got some autographs! Including Tracy, Ken, Claire, Cilla, Roy, Kirk also met Dev!I think the sets are great, Emmerdales are fab and EE's are great too! I think Home and Aways look a bit dodgy but anyway!

Soap characters look alot more glamarous now. In the old days people were more downtrodden.

More thought certainly went into the early sets, especially with regard to how a character's home defines their character. Physically Coronation Street's exterior and interior sets have never matched up, so in that way, yes they were not realistic. However, as far as actual quality of set design and attention to detail is concerned, for many years Coronation Street was faultless. Nowadays I feel that the sets and props have fallen by the wayside, probably due to the tough filming schedule. Also, we rarely see a range of different camera angles during interior scenes. All of the terraced houses are filmed from the same angle, VERY rarely being pierced with a glimpse of a different wall. The direction techniques have grown bland; once upon a time we would see an entire room in a single scene (...AND they were filmed as-live!) I could go on a completely differnt discussion about character defining through their sets and props, but I won't bore you with that

Of course we can look at them now and say how unrealistic they looked, but I guess on a small black and white TV in the 60s it may not have looked so obvious. Of course Sally's staircase still wobbling, and the store room in the corner shop shuddering when the door is shut is something they should have sorted out a long time ago. |

That is the only word for them. In my eyes, the interiors were top-notch for many years. |

Martha and Minne.. always mix those two up..
![]() The inside sets are quite good, but they never seemed 'real' to me for some reason. The lighting up until the mid-1990s was quite badly done. (Sorry lighting person.) And then they seemed to spend more time making the lighting look good - which made the sets look better, seems lately the lighting has gone back to the almost 70's 'no effort' style. Emmerdale also recently had a few sets lit rather 'too studio' like for drama. Last edited by MikeGne : 09-12-2006 at 03:59. |

I think that even now the lighting is poor. They've never made an effort with the homes, but they did with the hair salon and pub for as I say a while, they did some nice lighting with the windows of the salon that gave it a more realistic look, but lately it doesn't seem any effort has been made. But watching these supposed 'expensive dramas' on ITV3 that in the 60s and 70s were called 'proper tv' while soap wasn't really supposed to be very good, a lot of the technical standards are not really that much ahead of the soaps of the time either. Sherlock Homes (Granada) and Tales Of The Unexpected (Anglia) are two examples. |
