DR Who current series box set

Sorry if this has been posted before, but can anyone tell me the commentaries for each episode in the boxed set.

One of the great things about the classical dvds was the commentary, but the commentaries for the first season last year were really quite poor (alot of self-congratulation and navel gazzing). For some episodes there were just production and writers commentary, which is fine in itself but doesn't make for very good listening. It didn't help that Christopher Ecclestian didn't do any (if memory serves) and that Billi Pipers for stints were pretty pathetic (though at least she tried). John Barrowman was quite entertaining, but Bruno Langley was very quiet and rather dull.

Is there less production commentary this time? What about the guest actors, does anyone know if they did any? Tracy-Ann Oberman? Maureen Lipman? Etc.

I only bought the boxed set for the commentaries (otherwise might as well by the individual dvds whn they come out), but like I said last years were pretty appalling.

Cheers for any information.

See this review for details on who is on which comentary.

There's also different commentary tracks for each episode* found on the DW website if you've not already listened to them.

An Invision version of the New Earth Web Commentary (Collinson, Tennent and Davies) can be found on the BBC DW site on Day 6 of their Advent calendar.

*The Christmas Invasion one may (I've not heard the DVD one) be the same as on the DVD, the rest are different I think.

Thanks! I tried the obvious places (Amazon, BBC website), but none had it. This was basically what I was looking for. Cheers again.

Isn't the Dr Who box sets about £70? Does anyone else think it's a bit over priced for 13 episodes when you can get box sets of BSG for about £35?

£70 quid is just the reccomended retail price - many places are selling it between £40-50, including Asda. With this kind of thing it always pays to shop around - I remember when the first season was released there was someone complaining that they had paid full whack, then seen it on the internet for far less.

Some places do seem to have a tendency at least at first to charge full price, but often later fall into line with the better value retailers. In my experience HMV can often be overpriced, but recently I have started looking around Virgin and for some things (especially older DVDs) you can get good deals.

The RRP of BSG is actually 50 quid. If you look at a place like Amazon though, it's going for 40. Similarly, DW's RRP is 70, but it goes for 45.

So DW is a fiver more expensive for 11 hours of drama compared to BSG's 13.3 hours (BSG's has 6 extra episodes, but they're 5mins shorter than the standard DW one and 15mins shorter than one of them). Which is slightly worse value. Unless, of course, extras are a major value-ad for you in which case the DW set more than makes up for it with well over 5 hours of making of documentaries.

I was in HMV today and it was £55. With Christmas coming up maybe other people like me will be looking for it at a good price, so what price are you seeing it for and where? (in actual shops).

I paid £44 for the first series just after last Christmas so I'm waiting for someone to do the new one for £40-£45.

HMV and Virgin are amongst the worst places to buy brand new DVDs, best to check out WHSmiths and Woolworths, think it's about £45 there.

sendit.com are selling the series 2 box set for £42.89 with free postage. Or you can buy both series 1 and 2 together for £97.88

The Series 2 box set apparently has a rrp of £69.99. I used the BestPrice dvd website to find the cheapest, and 101cd are selling the boxset for £77.99 !!!

Thanks for all the websites but has anyone been to an actual shop?

WH Smiths and Woolworths never beat the special offers of the megastores a few weeks after release. The box set came out last month so it'll be around now that they all start doing those good offers. No other shops were doing the first one for £44 when I saw it in Virgin Megastore or HMV (can't remember which now).

I'm hoping it'll be cheaper this year since it isn't in a fancy box set and contains 5 discs (pretty much the same physical package as Spooks, all 4 seasons of which I've bought over the years for £15 each, just by waiting until Christmas and finding the right store. With Spooks alone I've saved myself well over £100)

We can all search websites, I was hoping people would post the prices that other people here can't compare so easily - shops, which contrary to popular belief sometimes beat the prices of any online store! (unless you know of one selling a complete set of Spooks DVDs, new, for £59.96 and also stamp a free card 6 times that gets you £10 off any purchase once you've collected 10 - so next Christmas I'll be paying £4.99 for season 5

I got the series 2 Boxset for £49.99 out of Whsmiths. Cheaper than Virgin or HMV. Though that was on the day the boxset got released.

The commentaries with Julie Gardner are appalling. All she does is just gush about how wonderful everything is. At least RTD admits to the flaws.

There's been way too much gushing in general over series 2, which is so so wrong. Series 1 was easily ten times better. At least if Russell can see the flaws things might be better for series 3.
