Top 10 cover versions
Here are my nominations.
I've tried to pick ones that really added to the original, or invested it with something new and special - and I'm always impressed when someone comes up with a great version of a song that is not particularly well known or loved - which is why Beats International are there, but not Candy Flip's version of Strawberry Fields. And "cover" involves it having been recorded by someone else beforehand - ie Mott The Hoople's All The Young Dudes doesn't count. Neither does Puff Daddy sampling something. She (Charles Aznavour) by Elvis Costello Be Thankful For What You've Got (William De Vaughn) by Massive Attack Nothing Compares 2 U (The Family) by Sinead O'Connor Creep (TLC) by Afghan Whigs Just (Dub) Be Good To Me (Princess) by Beats International Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) by Jeff Buckley Dancin' In The Moonlight (Thin Lizzy) by Smashing Pumpkins That's Entertainment (The Jam) by Morrissey O.H.M.S.S. (John Barry Orchestra) by The Propellerheads Gloria (Van Morrison) by Patti Smith |

The Drugs Don't Work (The Verve) - Ben Harper
Like Young Lovers Do (Van Morrison) - Jeff Buckley Walk On By (Dionne Warwick) - The Stranglers The Mighty Quinn (Bob Dylan) - Manfred Mann's Earth Band I Saw The Light (Hank Williams) - The The Strange Little Girl (The Stranglers) - Tori Amos Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly) - Rolling Stones Free Money (Patti Smith) - Penetration Private Life (The Pretenders) - Grace Jones Rock and Roll (Gary Glitter) - The Human League These are in no particular order, apart from "The Drugs Don't Work" which is easily the best cover version (maybe even the best track) I've ever heard. |

Although I am not a fan of his usual output, Marilyn Manson's cover of Tainted Love was spiffing

Originally posted by Peej Kerton Prince wrote it for the band The Family, one of his pet projects, like Appolonia Six and The Time. The song appeared on the band's first, self-titled, album in 1985. If you've got Real Audio, you can hear it in full here:And this is a cover of who?!?! http://www.geocities.com/~luvamour/fam.html I reckon it was pretty clever to realise this song's potential - but the treatment of it is not only a massive improvement, it takes it into classic territory. Prince now regularly performs the song, using Sinead O'Connor's arrangement of it. I love the lyrics of this: "I can see whomever I choose" is a wonderful riposte to those who say pop music mangles grammar. And I think there's a great piece of chutzpah towards the end, with "I know that living with you baby was sometimes hard, But I'm willing to give it another try..." Well, thanks very much! But perhaps you've forgotten that it's been 7 hours and 15 days since I took my love away - ie I dumped you! You're not going to get me to come back by being oh so noble and telling me that even though I was hard to live with, you might forgive me for it! Christ, you still don't get it, do you? You were hard to live with. That's why I left you!

Surely the best cover of a Prince song was 'I Feel For You' by Chaka Khan??

I quite like Cyndi Lauper's version of When You Were Mine, though! And Prince, of course, has done his fair share of covers recently: I Can't Make You Love Me, One Of Us, Betchabygollywow. Oddest Prince cover? Purple Rain by Stina Nordenstam.

I'm not a great lover of cover versions, but I accept some people take a song recorded by someone else and then make it their own. The stand out in this for me is "Nothing Compares 2 U"
But as a choice for Best... I'll pick an album "Sgt Pepper Was My Father" it was the whole of the "Sgt Pepper" album covered by different people in aid of Child Line, it spawned the #1 for Wet Wet Wet "A little Help from My Friends" andd has some stand out tracks from Billy Bragg, The Fall and The Wedding Present on it. |

I forgot Marvin Gaye's version of Yesterday, which is astonishing. He changes the melody dramatically, but it sends a chill up my spine every time I listen to it.

I have all the Radiohead albums for one thing, which in my eyes counts for a great deal of taste. |

I'm not a massive fan of cover versions and the only ones I can think of at the moment that I liked are
Freak Like Me - Sugarbabes (But loved the Adina Howard version at the time). Stoned Out of My Mind and Move on Up - Both done by The Jam Worst cover of all time, without a shadow of a doubt, is Lets Stay Together - Tina Turner. Whoever thought of that needs shooting!! |

How could I have forgotten the best cover version of all time, Tainted Love by Soft Cell. They managed to totally change the original but add to it as well.

What about Pascal feat. Karen Parry - I think we're alone now? Also, FLIP N FILL - I wanna dance with somebody and I agree, DJ Sammy - Heaven is awesome |
