They are very good if you want to distribute video around your home to PC's.

The "World Access" function is restricted in the UK becuase we use ADSL, which has poor uploading rates. They are proving populer in the US becuase they can upload as fast as the download.

Synchronous home connections in the US are just as rare as over here.

A lot of DSL services offer marginally better upstream speeds, but it's mostly about the same.

But Cable Net connections are far more widespread, probably becuase Cable is the preferred TV method in their massive sky scaper cities.

It's rare for a cable company to offer more than 512kbit upstream. Most packages seem to be 5mbit down, 384kbit up.
