Recording Of Subtitles

I have seen a review of the 92000T and it implies, but does not catagorically say that this machine can record subtitles. I want to know bec ause I currently have a VCR that can record subtitles, and have had it for ten years and it is getting long in the tooth. I might buy a 92000T if it does record subtitles

Yes it does, there is a dedicated button on the remote to switch them on and off

To be precise, all subtitles are recorded automatically, and you can switch them on and off during playback, so it's useful even if you aren't deaf, if someone says something which is unclear.

If you have subtitles on all the time it will work without problem.

If, like us, half the household need them and the other half find them annoying there is one small plus and two small negatives.

The plus is that the subtuitle settings are retained individually for each channel so in our house the kids channels and E4 have them on all the time whilst BBC4 has them always off.

The negatives are:

1. Whilst there is a button on the remote to turn the subtitles on and off it involves three key presses to achieve this.

2. If you have paused live TV you cannot turn subtitles on if they are off or off if they are on. To do this you have to press the stop button to go to the live feed, alter the subtitles then rewind to where you were.

These negatives are very minor and are irrelevant if you have subtitles on all the time. Even then they wouldn't stop me buying the machine - it has transformed the way we watch TV.

You cant get MHEG in timeshift mode therefore subtitles only work with live play. However, it occured to me that subtitle information is captured on every recording the PVR makes. My suggestion for subtitles to be available during timshift on a programme that is currently on is to press record button on it and then timeshift/chase play it.

Is this really the reason? I didn't think subtitles were part of MHEG but were part of the transport stream. They are part of the file that can be transferred to a PC and burnt to DVD. Also, as I recall some channels (e.g. abc1) don't have MHEG but do have subtitles.

I suupose it is possible that the MHEG engine is being used to display the subtitles.

You can access subtitles in timeshift without recording but you have to turn them on (and off) in a specific way.

If you simply rewind a live programme and try to turn on subtitles it doesn't let you but if you trun on subtitles on and then rewind they work just fine. The only thing you have to remember is you have to return back to live to turn them off.

I find that display on recorded programmes not quite 100%. Occasionally, a line will flash up then disappear before you can read it, then the next line will be missed before it recovers. Sometimes it will show the missed line if you jump back, but not always.

Maybe this is only a problem on programmes with a lot of fast dialogue where the decoder can't quite keep up. "West Wing" is the only one I use subtitles on regularly, so I notice it there. God knows what Eastenders would be like (probably all in CAPS).

Even with this, it's still better than other Freeview devices I've seen.
