i originally posted this in TV Programmes, problem was everyone agreed with me

i'm annoyed by soap operas, their actors, their sponsors, their fans, their awards, their magazines and most of all their influence on british life.

I used to watch them. I distinctly remember a time when they were actually well acted and interesting. When Eastenders was in its pomp it had some great drama and great comic moments.

That all came to an end when some bright spark thought "i know, why don't we ditch all other forms of programming we are not sure about and just bung on Corrie/Eastenders/Emmerdale 5 times a week!!??"

Straight away the storylines become TWICE as long, drawn out and boring as they were before, the good actors left in droves cos they had enough and every female in the country was suddenly "busy" every night watching this TOTAL and UTTER POINTLESS DRIVEL.

Why do people like Nikki Sanderson and Shane Ritchie reckon themselves so much??? or any soap actor for that matter?? most of them basically play exaggerated versions of themselves! and they get sooo much praise and attention from other media!! Programmes like GMTV, LK Today actually seem to exist in a world where they think that soaps are "real", previewing them with such zest and enthusiasm it unnerves me.

WHY do they all revel so much in depression, arguments, shouting and crying??!! Notice they now run trailers called Devastation Street! like they don't care how sad and depressing it is!! the more grief the better?? and people actually want to watch this?!

It's like every few months someone like Bradley Walsh turns up and is told "right then Bradley this is your big part now, basically someone will stitch you up and then you must fall into an Ian Beale style breakdown, crying a lot and contorting your face and neck muscles to show what a good actor you are, and then in a few months you'll be up for a nomination for best actor at the National TV Awards and the pea-brained simpleton crowd there will clap and applaud like you REALLY ARE a good actor. (!)

i don't mean to just have a go at Sanderson and Walsh, they are just 2 good examples. i could go on forever! suffice to say apart from Alec Gilroy and one or two others they are all average at best

Hollyoaks is so ridiculous it makes me cry. All the girls are so artificially good looking it makes you feel nauseaus and the blokes? jesus, if i see one more Cheshire style hair do i'll put my foot thru the telly. I honestly remember a period of around a year flicking over to Hollyoaks at various points and ALL i EVER saw was some guy called Tony crying and whinging - GET IT OFF MY TELLY!!!

IF YOU BUY "INSIDE SOAP" YOU SHOULD BE CERTIFIED INSANE ON YOUR EXIT FROM THE NEWSAGENT AND THEN HELD WITHOUT CHARGE FOR 90 DAYS UNTIL YOU CAN ADMIT THAT SOAP OPERAS ARE BAD FOR YOUR LIFE AND MOST IMPORTANTLY CR*P!!!!

I hate the way their "depressing" influences permeate into millions of living rooms across the country every single night of the bloody week, 9 scenes outta 10 misery laden pointless twaddle!! People should be reading books, playing with their kids, cookin some decent grub, playing boardgames or at least watchin some decent telly NOT slumped in front of their telly watchin "Devastaion Street"

I hate the way they're considered so popular by tabloids that they spend half the week with soap headlines and "scoops" on their poxy front pages - its not real! i do not care about any soapline or story cos its all made up!!!!! have you got that Lorraine Kelly!?? have you got that Sun, Mirror, Star!! have you got that gay bloke on GMTV!!!??

i know a lot of you will say "each to their own" and tell me to "shut up" or worse but its stuff like this that made me join this forum and i seriously need to get it out of my system before i combust!!!!

i feel better already...................................

Soaps maybe a bit over the top but that's what makes them entertaining, and it's not as if there's much else on at the mo. Plus some of the characters in Emmerdale are hilarious

In a way I agree, Soaps are on way to much and the actors (Esp on ITV) are on just about every programme.

Every time I tune into ITV we have either Wendy Petters, Jennie McAlpine and Kym Marsh are never off screen.

And then we have the very stupid Soapstar Superstar, etc.

Emmerdale is on 6 times a week, Corrie 5, Hollyoaks 5, Neighbours 5, Home and Away 5 and Eastenders 4.

Emmerdale and Corrie are repeated about 3 times in the week on ITV 2. etc

It is way to much, but the state of british TV nowadays it's all that seems to pull in the viewers, so no matter how much we protest it's not going to change anything. This is mainly why Corrie have lost legends such as Fred and Mike and also why favourites are pushed into the background like Betty, Vera and Jack because the actors can't cope with the pressure and we have bland and pointless characters like Kelly, Joanne, Molly and Sean.

It's going to kill what's left of British Television and the Soap's.

To Kingfisher 30; the trick with soaps is seeing the funny side to everything. Emmerdale as an example; I find ol man King and his nonstop growling and shouting v tiresome but when I concentrate on his terrible hair; or the way he becomes gradually redder as he shouts........brings comedy you see, and plenty of it. There's always a happy side; you just have to find it

I don't know where to start with a reply.

Actually, I don't think I'll bother. I must say that there is no need for the OP to be so venomous, regardless of their views.

sorry Elsie - i sincerely don't mean to upset anyone

probably should have just left it in the other forum - was feeling a bit mischevious

"venomous" is a bit strong innit? anyway, my anger is aimed more towards TV companies and their policies and scriptwriters than viewers
