Cheap Chinese MP4 Players

Has anyone had first-hand experience of the cheap Chinese iPod MP4 look-alikes that sell on eBay for around 35 pounds? I did read somewhere that you have to be careful about the stated ratings of these units as 4GB can mean 4 giga-bits, not giga-bytes.

Any useful information from personal experiences with these units (reliability, performance etc.) will be appreciated.

I have one, and have sold a number on eBay. Although they vary by manufacturer, good ones are extremely reliable and excellent value for money. You can buy from within the UK or from Hong Kong, and there are some retailers who will sell direct to you from Hong Kong (not through eBay).

Either way expect to pay £23-£30 for 1GB Nano, £32-£42 for 2GB. Around £5-10 more if you want the security of buying within the UK. 4GB is, as you say, a bit of an unknown quantity - I have it on good authority that the Samsung chipset used in most of the players supports up to 2GB only.

I'd also steer clear of the 2nd gen Nano lookalikes, as the quality isn't there (yet).
