Hi Guys

My husband treated himself to a Pioneer PSP436XDE in the summer (along with Sky HD) and I want to get him a DVD player (possibly DVD-R) with HDMI output for Xmas.

I'm confused about upscaling?? Sounds a good idea but does it work?

DH does love to theme his equipment and is a gadget freak (avid T3/Stuff reader!) so I don't want to make a mistake 'cos he knows his stuff ...so I thought I would turn to you guys.

He used to be a Sony freak, and currently has DVD and AV AMP from them, so I think I am possibly looking for a Pioneer HDMI DVD... any reviews/opinions?

I guess I need to replace his AV amp at some point... any pointers on this one?

I don't know much about SD to HD upscale. But I would recomend you get him a BD player or HD-DVD player. They will cost more, but the benefit will be much, much greater than just upscaling SD. BD (Sony)/HD DVD (Toshiba) are the next gen formats, in case you didn't know.

If you're going for a Pioneer DVD player then the following are the models that have upscaling 720p/1080i & HDMI (S = Silver):
DV-989AVi-S less than £600 on internet
DV-696AV-S less than £130 " "
DV-490V-S less than £80 " "

If you want matching DVD and AV Amp and you have a decent budget then I would recommend you look at Denon - DVD 1930 or DVD 2930 with AVR 2307 or AVR 2807. You will also need surround speakers.

I personally wouldn't go for a Blu-Ray or HD DVD player yet as they are still relativity new technology, quite expensive and there is not the HD media in abundance yet. I have also heard reports that they are not very good at playing SD DVDs.

I haven't seen any reviews but it it has a cracking spec and is THX certified which you don't usually get at this price level.

Denon and Yamaha tend to get all the plaudits for their AV amps but I'm sure the Pioneer is up there in terms of features and quality. No reason not to go for it if you are set on this make.
