Following this thread I am seeking recommendations for DVD players meeting the following requirements:

Good Audio CD quality, good DVD image quality
Appealing design, black or dark finish
Cost < £180
Multiregion support
SCART output
Easy to use
Plays just about any commonly available format, but am not fussed about some image or music formats
How about the Denon DVD-1730? Review of the silver version here.

Black version available here. The player can be updated to multiregion via a downloadable firmware update.

OK this is a cracking player - does that imply many other players are not? Seriously: my Marantz died, but while it worked, it simply played just about any DVD without any hangs or hiccups. Was I lucky? Or, what is it that makes other players worse than this one?

For example, the much cheaper Sony NS-36B (£50-ish) is aesthetically appealing. Is it inferior, and in which way?

Thanks for helping me out.

Put it this way... you get what you pay for. You can get some wonderful cheap DVD players, the award winning Toshiba SD-360E comes to mind which produces an excellent picture on a par with more expensive players but check out the plastic case and flimsyness of the DVD slot. If you open the unit you will soon realise how the sell it for the price they do.

Now, if you want something that is going to last several years especially if it is going to get a lot of use, you need to spend a bit more money to get the build quality.

At the end of the day it's your budget and your choice.
