HDTV & DVD Receiver Driving me MAD
Ok I am at my wits end.
I bought a Samsung HDTV in August and was at first happy with it model is below http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx...&InMerch=1&v=3 I paid £160 more then what is said on the site back then. Anyway I know the TV is broke and samsung are coming to take a look at it as it will not accept anything in the HDTV port including my DVD player which is the below link http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/products...360/index.html I am using the player through the Scart socket of my DVD player as the TV is broken it will not accept HDTV all I get is a green bloody screen. Anyway enough about that, my problem now is that when I watch some DVD's it is in fullscreen i.e no black bars at the top and bottom of the screen and then when I watch other DVD's I get black bars at the bottom of the screen. For example I can watch The back to the future triology or lost season1 on DVD and it appears fine no black lines (letterbox). Yet if I watch other films (the majority of them) such as The fast and the furious Tokyo drift Shaun of the Dead Superman Returns (downloaded DVD) to test if the same happend (sorry if I shouldnt mention that, I dont download DVD's, films etc but just needed to test this dam machine) Football Factory's All of these are in letterbox mode and it is driving me made. Surely as my TV is a widescreen TV then this should display the full image? Or am I missing something? I have changed the setting's on the TV to force 16:9 and it does not make a difference. I have made the settings on the DVD player as using a 16:9 display TV, yet I still get a letterbox. This is driving me mad now ![]() Is this normal? |

Perfectly normal.
Widescreen for TV production is 16:9 where as there are a number of ratios for movies including 2.35:1 which is what you are watching when you get the black bars top/bottom on a 16:9 TV. The director chose that ratio to provide a wide panaramic canvas to show his movie on and thankfully many directors are good enough to make sure that DVD releases maintain the OAR (Original Aspect Ratio). Some movies or directors prefer the standard 1.77:1 and others an open matte but at the end of the day theatrical movies come to DVD in 1.77:1 or 2.35:1 ratio. |

Its kinda annoying though?
If it was played through the HDMI port if it worked, then would it upscale the image to fit the whole TV? Last edited by colic : 14-12-2006 at 23:05. |
