LCD vs. Plasma
Just a quick one. Is a LCD better than a Plasma. After reading up on this topic, it looks as the Plasma is on the way out. I've got a round £1500 to play with. What would you recomend.
Regards LD. PS Happy xmas to all of you on this forum

There is a good argument to say that a top of the line Plasma will outperform a top of the range LCD (we are talking 42" and above).
However cost will be an issue, plasma is much more expensive than lcd when we were are talking cutting edge technology from the leading manufacturers that actually do the R&D themselves. So first as yourself why you want a plasma or lcd and then decide what sort of screen size you want (that in itself can make one or the other redundant). |

For 42" or over you will probably find Plasma tv to be better priced, below 42" then LCD tends to be cheaper

Plasma inch for inch are better value than lcd and have a superior image.
Go for a panasonic plasma 42" for under £1k. Anything above 32" and lcd's bad pixelation becomes apparent. |

dont forget, that the plazma you have to keep upright,if you tilt it in anyway, the screen is useless.thats why lcd is better.
i have a 42 lcd screen and i see no diffrence between the two. lcd is much brighter and sharper than my old tv set. |

I have no idea where you heard about tilting but that is false info.
I have had a 40" lcd and plasma side by side, plasma is a lot better. |

I have had a 40" lcd and plasma side by side, plasma is a lot better. It's probably a misunderstanding of the needs for upright storage and when transporting due to the structure of the panel. As you say in actual use a wall mount even slightly angled is not going to do any damage. Providing make and models plus source material could help the OP in his decision

CAn I just also point out that a Plasma screen will eat about 100watts more electricity than a LCD screen, and put a lot of that into heat .

Stay away from skiing documentaries and tune in to those featuring coal mines! ![]() As for heat, My Panasonic PH9 is as cool as a cucumber and as silent as a church mouse

i would want to future proof yourself. you will need 2 hdmi inputs plus scarts.
then the newest format is 1080 p or i all these things add up. a xbox 360 has hdmi, and sky and dvd player. so should you wait for 3 hdmi tellys? i would |

Plasma has a more limited life - norm is 60,000 hours but they also loose their contrast / brightness intensity levels even before that.

I'm an advocate of AV amps, plug all your equipment into one of them, and you only really need one connection in the TV

So can you recommend some good av amps at different price ranges? I have just bought my first plasma - a panasonic 42" Viera which we are going to wall mount as we have 2 holy terrors under 2 who are curious little climbers! We have still to get bracket and any cables but want to decide on our setup first before putting it all in place

For some reason you seem to get loads of people saying LCD are better than Plasma nowadays. But I know several people with relatively new 42" LCD screens (non HD), and my 42" Toshiba (badged Panasonic) Plasma has a far better image quality and more vibrant colours - even though its 4 years old! The life may be slightly less - but in terms of picture quality I've no idea where this idea about LCD being better came from.

Personally, I would buy neither and would rather buy and LED TV instead due to their exceptional picture brightness ability.

The major advantages over CCFL are their thinner profile, and their lower power consumption, both of which are considered important by the manufacturers. But LED backlit LCD's didn't exist when the last posts in this thread were made, so it's not really relevant anyway. |

I'm not sure if it's just a Vestel manufactured TV with a fancy brand badged onto it, but it is a Digilogic 26 inch LED TV.
![]() It's just a badge on any cheap sets the supermarket can buy, most probably Vestel, unless they can find something cheaper?. |
