Download from Toppy to laptop fails!

Using Altair I can see the contents of my (nearly full) 250Gb Toppy but when I attempt to copy a file across the operation fails after about 250k of a 1.6Mb .rec file has been copied.
I get a message like "unable to copy. Check your USB link". USB connection is OK, nothing has been touched or moved but Altair now shows the Toppy side of the screen greyed out although the laptop side is clear. Closing and re-opening Altair shows the Toppy files again until I try again when the failure repeats.
What can I be doing wrong?

is this every file or just that one?
if its one problematic file then:
check its not got any colons ( or any other character in the file name.
You could also try and make a 'copy' of the recording on the toppy to see of that fixes it, highlight the programme in the toppys archive, press play then press record, followed by fast forward to speed it up, up to 6x.

If its dropping out on all transfers, then you could try another USB lead, and/or re-instaling the drivers on your p.c.

Ive had a few drop oouts with the USB conection although it rarely happens to me.
Another thing is how long is your usb lead, and have you tried another USB port on your P.C?

Thank you, Richard.
I'll try those suggestions this evening and post how I get on. The USB cable is about 3 metres but it has worked before.

Quite right! It was the colons what done it. Changed the file name and all went well. Not a quick process, though.
Thanks for the advice

i found this out also, tidied up my toppy as you do

tried to move "Lord of the rings: return of the king"

and "naked gun 2 1/2" and "naked gun 33 1/3" for days

then i realised colons and slashes are a big no-no

the problem wasn`t helped by the error from altair

"unable to copy file may be in use"

not the best error description but still we all become wiser

no characters like these.... *?/:\
are there any more

can having th usb cable over a mains cable cause problems
or would a ferrite choke (less than £1) on the usb cable solve this problem

I had a similar upload issue, but I noticed that when the Altair program dropped out, the Toppy would reset and then restart, is this the same sort of thing?
I have been using a 2M USB lead via a hub and no interfierence from any mains.
I shall retry the name thing first and let you know how I get on
