The musical person's Doctor Who thread...

Has anybody else got hold of the Doctor Who OST released on 11th Dec by Silva Screen records? I have, and I can't stop listening to it. I bought it on impulse as I knew there were at least a couple of tracks I would like (viz Doomsday, or what is popularly known as "The Singy Lady on the Beach" apparently), but the whole thing is magnificent. (And I don't even work for Silva Screen, I promise).

Anyway, it got me thinking about the music of Doctor Who. Is this something people have views about? I know Murray Gold is a bit of a villain in some quarters because the music is a bit loud, but I have to admit when I watch some old Doctor Who the music is annoyingly radiophonic. Am I alone? Is Murray Gold a genius, or Davros with a baton? What music from the series do we like, and what do we hate? Any thoughts?

I like the music. My favorite has to be Song for Ten. I downloaded it from iTunes for .79p - a bargain. (And I don't even work for iTunes )

For me, the good film music is when I do not realise it's there, it just creates the mood of what's going on on screen. In this respect I find Murray Gold's music very good.

Another Murray Gold fan here (have been since "Queer as Folk" in fact).

The album is great. I was really surprised how long some of the tracks are, considering they must get chopped up for the show.

When I watch the classic series (say from 1970-1977 stories), the music tends to sound annoying and repetetive to me. I like Murray's music better - but I do find his overuse of dramatic music for dull (well, not-that-exciting) scenes pointless. I like it when the real Orchestra music is used - some of the Electronic music sounds cringy.

I hope they tweak the theme tune for The Runaway Bride. After hearing the music on the trailer (on www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho - 12) this might be the case.

I've got the soundtrack, most of it is very good, for me there's only one noticeable piece missing and its the one at the very start of 'the girl in the fireplace' which was my favourite piece in the whole of the second series!

Madame De Pompadour is good though! Song for ten isn't as good as the live version or the original but it might just take some getting used to. I still can't get passed the idea of "Social Club Performer" when I hear it.

Is iTunes the only place to download it?

I think the CD is fantastic, Neil Hannon does a great job of the two songs - although Love Don't Roam sounds remarkably similar to an old Northern Soul track called The Snake - anyone know this one?

I love the soundtrack and I think Murray does a wonderful job, but I would like to hear a more of the orchestra.

Also, why have they got Neil Hannon doing song for ten? I much prefer the original.

Apparently the original singer had a car accident so was unable to sing for the soundtrack. Good luck to him. I really do prefer his version of Song for Ten. I don't mind Neil doing Love Don't Roam though, he kinda suits it.
