think he will go after the 4th series and who can blame him. by then he would have done 3 series and will most probably want to spread his wings and capitalise on his success in the role. if he were to stay too long then there is a danger of just being known for one part.

Gone are the days of the jobbing actor who was grateful for the work.

Philip Hinchcliffe speaking of Tom Baker on a commentary recounted the story of his casting. TB was working on a building site in Liverpool, found out at lunch he'd been cast as Doctor Who, went back to the building site and told his mates. Nobody would believe him.

So grateful that he stayed for 7 years, although that was maybe 2 or 3 years too long really.
An interesting snippet that I did not know Yoonix. Thankyou.

Im sure David Tennant as grateful as it is possible to be but eventually he will either want to further his career or move on to something else - it doesnt mean he isnt grateful.

But can a jobbing actor remain a jobbing actor if he becomes famous because of that part?

I don't know why actors don't like being known for just one character. Most jobbing actors would kill to have a role as big as doctor who, even if they do become typecast. It's better than playing a load of roles that no one's gonna remember.

At which point (as per my previous post) he ceases being a jobbing actor. And he will also (quite understandably) get a taste for fame, and the opportunities (both financial and career) that go with that fame.

And of course, if he fails to make the part his own, then he is classed a failure, and the fans moan .......

I've always felt that the ideal time span for an actor to play Doctor Who is 3 years whilst for a companion it's 2 years.

Personally I'd love to see someone play the Doctor for a reasonably long and untroubled run of about 4 or 5 years. The last actor who actually made it to a fourth season without quitting prematurely or having fate steal the role/series away from them was Tom Baker, and that was nearly 30 years ago!

Strange that there is so much pressure on the actor playing The Doctor to leave as much as stay.

Its almost like the media expect him to quit after a year, and staying for two is almost a sign of failure.

David Tennant has been able to do other things whilst playing the Doctor-and as for playing one role during your career-look at Bill Roache in Coronation Street, 46 years! He's had no complaints, regular job for good pay. So long may David Tennant stay.

I reckon they should give DW a 2 year break (hiatus) after Tennant leaves.
