Hi folks! anyone else out there hate large say 28" + Tv's that have that awful picture that everyone is fat! and often many are way to pixille! What is that all about! Im quite happy with my standard 21" great picture standard letterbox type TV that everyone looks the correct size in!

Yes, but the fat picture is only created if the TV isn't set up properly: a WS TV can show a 4:3 picture in its correct aspect ratio. And good TVs, with good broadcast sources don't have pixellation.

No, what I hate is people who have widescreen TVs and have them wrongly set-up so that everybody appears fat. It's not difficult to configure the Sky or Freeview box and DVD player to output an anamorphic signal, but too many people are too lazy to bother doing it, and just live with the fat picture.

But to put the blame for this at the television's feet is a mistake. Why would anybody prefer to watch movies or programmes where there are either intrusive black bands at the top and bottom of the screen, or even worse, the dreaded pan and scan kicks in and all action from the edges of the picture are lost? Widescreen is here to stay, and anybody who says they hate it is not a true television/cinema lover. Still, some people couldn't get to grips with colour TV broadcasts either...

People only look to fat on them because they are set up incorrectly.

So many people have their TVs set automatically to wide that many people think that's how they're supposed to be even for 4:3 viewing. Many Sky boxes, Cable boxes, Freeview boxes, DVD players etc are set up to output a 4:3 picture which is then stretched to fattyvision on a widescreen TV.

16:9 is a good compromise; 4:3 programmes will have bars on the side, 2.35:1 will have bars on the top and bottom while the now standard (for TV) 16:9 will have no bars. By contrast if set up properly your 4:3 TV will have no bars for 4:3 (old TV programmes, CH4 news, old films) but will have bars top and bottom for 16:9 and huge bars for 2.35:1.

EDIT: I must learn to type more quickly, the two previous posters beat me to it.

So what you really mean is you hate widescreen TV's that have not been setup correctly then? Watching a 16:9 film is much better on a widescreen TV than on a 4:3 TV any day!

That is a ridiculous statement to make. I hate Widescreen TVs they are too big and have a terrible picture. I love TV and cinema though, sometimes less is more.

Widescreen TVs are too big? Don't you mean big TVs are too big? Widescreen TVs have a terrible picture? Don't you mean cheap and nasty TVs have a terrible picture? I have a widescreen TV that is neither too big (in fact, it is the perfect size for my living room) and the picture is fantastic. And to claim you love cinema, then to claim you prefer to watch any movie made since the mid-sixties on a 4:3 TV rather than a 16:9 TV is just odd. Do the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen enhance your movie experience, or do you prefer not being able to see the whole picture when you watch a movie?

With my parents cheapo CRT TV the settings choice is either 4:3 or 16:9. On 16:9 everything gets stretched to fill the screen but not evenly. This gives some hilarious pictures sometimes with people having one fat arm and one normal looking one.

What about Lisa Dingle? Or Christopher Biggins? Or Fred Elliot? Or Jabba The Hut? You must have a magic telly if they're not fat.

But that's NOT the TV's problem - it's the person who's set it up.

Well, instead of complaining about it on a forum.

Get out the sodding manual to the TV, and do something about changing the settings so the people are no longer stretched, it's quite simple!

Honestly, some people... It's not rocket science.

But you've already agreed it's because the TV (or more likely the digibox) has not been set up properly, not because it's a widescreen TV. Widescreen TVs by default do not make people look short and fat. That is fact. But, if the source of the programme is not set up to match the receiver of the programme, then of course you will get anomalies.

You'd have an equal but opposite problem if the Sky or Freeview box had been set up to output an anamorphic picture and you were watching on a 4:3 box, everyone would be too tall and thin. That would be like me complaining because a programme I was watching was too quiet, when all I would have to do is turn the volume up. It's not the TVs fault that I've got the volume turned too low.

Have a quiet word with these friends of yours who've spent money on a widescreen TV but not set it up properly and tell them how to configure the display properties of their digital TV box - they'll thank you in the end. Or stay at home and watch your titchy little 4:3 telly where you can only see two-thirds of the picture, while we all watch the match in its full widescreen glory and appreciate the fact that we can see much more than you can.

Right...well a widescreen TV takes the letterboxed picture (i.e. no black bars) and shows only that...but bigger.

I remember the first widescreen TV I had a rather irritating flaw of displaying any RGB signal as 16:9, so I had the option of changing my OnDigital box to composite or putting up with fat people. The fat people won.

Every TV I've had since has handles aspect ratio correctly, although it's not such as issue anymore as nearly every programme is in widescreen nowadays.

As far as football is concerned, I thought it was all broadcast in widescreen anyway, so not only get fat players but also lose a third of the picture. As has been mentioned, the Sky/cable/digibox needs to be set up to output 16:9.

How close to the TV do you need to sit to watch it? Does it give you that cinema effect? Doubt it.

I hope it has a scart socket otherwise nothing will be crips or clear in 10 yrs time.

Do you brag to your mates about your 21" CRT? I bet your place is packed on match days!!

I would have to move the sofa and chairs in 4 feet to be able to see the picture on a 21" TV!
