Has this machine got any multi-tasking features?

i.e. DVD playback while recording to HDD?

Playback off HDD while recording to DVD from digital tuner?

Advertising implies yes; Sony Tech Dept. say no.

Any ideas out there?

The examples you give are all do-able, including reording to HDD whilst watching an existing recording on HDD. Nice to see Sony understand their products as well as ever If you google for the product name you should find a pdf version of the manual available from the Sony site.
