Remember Popstars The Rivals?

Of course you probably do, it was the show that launched 'Girls Aloud'. Last night I was messing about on Youtube and found that alot of the peformances are up on there.

I have to say I have never heard such aload of out of tune drivel in all my life. I take back everything I have said about the level of talent on this series of The X Factor.

Here is a clip of Emma Beard, who later joined the band ' Clea' murdering the Ronettes 'Be My Baby'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhCz0Gs5huI

Absoloutley excrutiating!!

I think the only good person on Popstars The Rivals was Nadine. Too bad she is wasted in Girls Aloud.

Funny enough, we were talking about this in work the other day.

I seem to remember that the boys weeks were fabulous and they had several real talents. The girls weeks, however, were shocking. Some weeks, you were lucky to get anyone in tune, let alone a great performance.

Just goes to show the powere of good songs and image that a bunch of girls who can barely hold a note are such a success yet some really talented boys lasted about 5 minutes, thanks to Pete 'I'm a millionaire' Waterman.

I agree Nadine was always wasted on Girls Aloud. She should have waited a few months and auditioned for Pop Idol 2, she would have walked it. Lets face it she would have had no real competition.

I still believe Louis had some deal with Nadine as she was on the Irish popstars and kicked off because she had lied about her age. He kept her to one side and told her to comeback and do Popstars The Rivals instead.

None of the GA can sing that well, look at their peformances on Youtube. Cheryl is woeful how she got picked for the band I will never know. Nicola and Sarah are OK but not great, same for Kimberly

The whole is greater than the sum of their parts. Plus some wizardry in the recording studio and the ability to dance and lipsynch at the same time. And by choosing Sound of the Underground for their first single Louis Walsh showed he knows the music industry much better than Mr SCowell.

What annoys me is you get ppl like sarah harding who is an ass hole - and cant sing as well as other talent........and shes no on 600k a yr (yes im jealous) as well as other things like advertising etc.......

if she went in to todays x factor, she wouldnt get to the final - just a plain good singer like many others..............

And that nadine is pretty amazing - but look at it this way

your offered pretty much a guaranteed position in a band - or........ go for pop idol / x factor (where your personality counts for a lot) and the fac tthat youve wanted to sing all your life

Strangely enough, I was never a Nadine fan when the show was on (weird this thread has been started, I was just thinking about this show only yesterday), but then I was pretty young. I remember voting for Nicola and Kimberley Lord knows why now lol
That performance as posted up there of one of my favourite songs was bloody brilliant - in a way Nadine kind of reminds me of Leona, she has a brilliant voice, but I don't remember her personality, still, as I said before, I was younger when the show was on. Part of me wishes they'd do another series, but then the other half doesn't, incase the winner's outshine Girls Aloud

I actually can not see anything in Nadine at all. Ok, she can hold a tune but I don't like her voice that much and I don't think she's either attractive or charasmatic enough to be a solo atrist tbh.

This show was God awful and had little to no real talent at all. I agree Nadine was and is still wasted in Girls Aloud. If she had just waited for Pop Idol 2 then she would have won hands down and would have probably saved the Pop Idol format in this country.

It was an awful show, a poor mans Pop Idol and even a poor mans X factor before an X factor show ever appeared lol. It was that awful. This was probably the show that killed Pete Watermans music career in one go, the guy had no clue didn't he? Lol.

I agree completely, some of the boys were really good but Pete managed to completely screw it up with a naff song and generally bad promotion/marketing. I thought the girls were really weak but, as much as I don't like Louis much, he is a damned good manager and it's mainly down to him that they succeeded initially, and down to good image and clever promotion etc that they have remained.

Nadine was the best female singer IMO. I didn't rate a lot of the girls to be honest, the guys were much better singers overall, especially Anton and Daniel.

imho only Nadine and Nicola could really sing. Sarah was there for image but heaven alone knows what Kimberley and Cheryl contribute (except column inches from their antics).

Yes, in terms of singing ability the girls were for the most part poorer but Louis certainly knew his stuff and choosing "Sound of the Underground" was a revelation because it was both catchy and not too vocally demanding. Pete had some great vocalists to work with but screwed it up big time.

You know what winds me up? Even now, Pete Waterman will take no responsibility for screwing up those boys chance of a career. He blames them for not listening to him and to believing their own hype.
His answer to everything is either (A) I've got more money than you've got or (B) I've had 876 Top Ten singles (yep but none after 1987 )

What used to astound me was that we week after week the girls would come on the show and sing horrificly and Louis would sit there and tell them they were all brilliant.

He would then accuse Pete of being petty for pointing this out. But Pete was pretty much always right, he might be old fashioned but he does have an eye for talent. He always championed Will Young when Simon was knocking him down.

I think Louis was more interested in a group that looked good rather than one that sounded good.

Nadine was fabulous, but her head voice was somewhat weak - that 'felt' was awful, and the third 'oh' on the 'oh-oh-oh' wasn't much to be proud of either. But she more than made up for it in the ease of the rest of the performance her beautiful and rich tone.

The girls had the look and personality generally and are as good as they need to be for commercial no brainer pop and their producers and management have done a great job, much like the Spice Girls.

The boys had superior voices generally, but had bad management and an image problem, which is a killer if you're trying to be a successful boyband.

And Cowell would do well to take heed with Leona and stay well clear of old ballads which people wouldn't dream of buying further down the line!

She has done all right for herself. I doubt in todays pop climate she'd do as well solo, as she doesn't (or didn't) write and would be totally dependant on someone to write her hits and that's easier said than done in pop at the moment.

exactly what id have typed...

Girls Aloud have charisma and are interesting (both their records and interviews)

ive heard them described as a "walking hen-night" by the press, which i think is very accurate, they are very much a "fun" band. Which is just as important as being talented in todays market.

Nadine looked far healthier on that You Tube clip. She's looking positively emaciated these days.
