Enders always takes over Corrie at Xmas and generally the first week of the New Year, but come next Monday, Corrie will be in poll position again and probs for the rest of the year! |

Coronation St has now opened up a convincing lead, and still pulls >10m viewers for most if not all of its weekly episodes, sometimes 11-12m.
Unless the BBC can arrest the decline and make EastEnders a programme people want to watch again, I would be surprised if it has reached 10m viewers on more than a handful of occasions by the end of this year. And it will no doubt be trounced by 1 hr Emmerdales again this year. And probably sink to new ratings depths over the summer. Whenever I see it, it is a bleak, humourless, miserable show. It is more realistic than Coro St, but at least that has some gritty northern humour and likeable characters, and I can see why people choose to spend half an hour a night with that. This is for the first showing only, the data came from BARB. |

I dont imagine the BBC are all that bothered about Coronation Street being a million or so ahead of EastEnders with regard to weekday episodes. At the end of the day EE gets high ratings by todays standards, provides a leg up to other shows, and helps bulk up primetime share. I would say its still doing an invaluable job even if its not quite the event it used to.

I see the first official Christmas ratings are now up on BARB, for the week ending 24/12.
http://www.barb.co.uk/viewingsummary...klyterrestrial Strictly Come Dancing pulled 10.64m and 12.11m for its final - the first instalment is really quite staggering for a 5.40pm-6.55pm Saturday slot in this day and age. What would it have got in a primetime slot? The results show came reasonably close to Coro St and EastEnders in the overall Top 10 for 2006. EastEnders continued its poor pre-Christmas showing, failing to get to 10m all week and hitting a low of 8.3m, whilst Coro St powered ahead with 10m-11.4m audiences, dropping to 8.44m on Christmas Eve. Richard Hammond's TV re-appearance helped Jonathan Ross pull a fantastic late night audience of 5.5m - I'd guess his highest ratings since Madonna a couple of years back. Overall, not a brilliant week for BBC1 - but it was the most uninspiring pre-Christmas schedule I can ever remember. That said, they still pulled a 23.4% share against ITV1's pitiful 17.4%. BBCs1 & 2 managed to get a greater combined share than ITV1, CH4 and Five put together. Good figures for Channel 4 - nice to see the Father Ted Christmas Special still pulling 2.2m on its 11th successive annual showing! |

I know Ronant has already put the Christmas week top programmes up in the general ratings thread, but for completeness, the official BARB top 30s are here:
http://www.barb.co.uk/viewingsummary...klyterrestrial BARB evidently still looking for the Scottish viewers of Pirates of the Caribbean! Nothing particularly surprising - I think we all knew what to expect. (I hadn't expected Last of the Summer Wine to sneak into the BBC1 top 30 though - sign of the times that you can get into the BBC1 top 30 shows in Christmas week with just 4.9m viewers - it would have been around 8m I guess 10 years ago) Most surprising ratings of the week? A Christmas Day morning repeat of Friends, shown at 10.20am, pulling 1.26m and being the 28th most-watched CH4 programme that week! Presumably people got up, opened their presents, and switched on the box to see what was on - and found a Friends repeat the best on offer. Depressing on so many levels... |

I have a vague recollection of BBC1 once getting 30 audiences over 10m in one week at Christmas, and I think ITV1 managed that sometimes during the rest of the year. Amazing how audiences have declined in such a short period. |

![]() Probably wasn't that unusual an audience, it just stood out in the Ch4 top 30 - the only programme at that time of day that featured all week. |

Oldest Christmas ratings on BARB's website are from 1998, when 7.35m was the 30th place, although that was only the week to 27th, as Christmas to New Year was split between two "ratings weeks".
Only 8 years ago, the BBC1 top 30 was: millions 1 EASTENDERS (FRI/SUN) 22.14 15.04 7.10 2 EASTENDERS (TUE/SUN) 19.42 15.05 4.36 3 EASTENDERS (THU/SUN) 17.50 12.52 4.98 4 EASTENDERS (MON/SUN) 17.10 13.54 3.56 5 EASTENDERS (FRI/SUN) 16.15 10.81 5.34 6 MEN BEHAVING BADLY (FRI 2152) 14.91 7 MEN BEHAVING BADLY (SAT 2136) 13.40 8 THEY THINK ITS/OVER (FRI 2237) 12.31 9 CASUALTY (SAT 2004) 12.08 10 BEFORE THEY/FAMOUS (FRI 2101) 11.93 11 MRS BROWN (SUN 2041) 11.53 12 AIRPORT AT CHRISTMAS (TUE 2000) 11.12 13 THIS IS YOUR LIFE (SUN 2001) 10.66 14 NEIGHBOURS (MON 1340/1736) 10.40 3.50 6.90 15 FRENCH/SAUNDERS/SPCL (SAT 2218) 10.30 16 NEIGHBOURS (WED 1341/1737) 10.18 3.71 6.48 17 JONATHAN CREEK (THU 2130) 9.86 18 SPEED - FILM (TUE 2134) 9.80 19 NEIGHBOURS (TUE 1341/1737) 9.59 3.43 6.16 20 NEIGHBOURS (THU 1311/1717) 9.34 3.89 5.45 21 BABE (FILM) (FRI 1903) 9.26 22 AUNTIE'S NEW BLOOMER (FRI 1758) 9.08 23 ANTIQUES ROADSHOW (SUN 1816) 8.98 24 ANIMAL HOSPITAL (THU 2000) 8.83 25 BIRDS OF A FEATHER (THU 2030) 8.74 26 CHANGING ROOMS/XMAS (FRI 1833) 8.50 27 NAT LOTTERY DRAW (SAT 1944) 8.46 28 BRING/SUNSHINE/ERIC (WED 2134) 8.15 29 MYSTERIES/C.VORDERMN (TUE 2030) 7.85 30 SONGS OF PRAISE (SUN 1741) 7.35 Would be interesting to see the ratings from 10 years earlier. I have a vague recollection of BBC1 once getting 30 audiences over 10m in one week at Christmas, and I think ITV1 managed that sometimes during the rest of the year. Amazing how audiences have declined in such a short period. The change in ratings just happens to 'coincide' with Mark Thompson becoming Director General of the BBC. He's had a policy of 'event' programming- of having money and attention focused on a particular programme and then having schedule fillers put around it, rather than having a series of reasonably funded (depending upon their programme type) and promoted programmes in a 'menu', as was the case until then. It's been a disaster, in ratings terms, and for the audience, who have been starved of frontline entertainment, but Thompson seems to have been a master at managing low expectations. If you take out the soap operas (including the hospital soaps)- the audience for which has dropped significantly since then (probably due to overexposure)- you'll see that the ratings are on a near par with today's top performers (eg comedy specials, Strictly Come Dancing, New Tricks, Doctor Who). The audience is still there if the programmes are provided. |

Of course, the ratings listed are from 1998 and not 2003 as specified, but the point still holds true; the 'event' programming policy was developed from when the BBC's channels were increased in 1998, but it's only been official policy under the present DG.
