EastEnders did very well considering it was on against HB - a programme that usually gets similar ratings and it had 30 mins head start. The best performance of the night has to go to Casualty - 7.5 million against Corrie is outstanding. Another night with big ratings for BBC1 and poor ratings for ITV1. BTW why do people who hate ITV1 soaps suddenly start getting excited for BBC1 soaps such as Casualty & EE's? |

From BBC NEWS:
Vicar of Dibley tops Christmas TV Dawn French's sitcom The Vicar of Dibley scored the highest ratings of any TV programme in the UK on Christmas Day, according to overnight estimates. The BBC One show was seen by 11.4m viewers, compared to 10.7m for the last episode of an East Enders double bill. Coronation Street was third, followed by the first half of East Enders. The BBC's Doctor Who, Little Britain Abroad and Strictly Come Dancing were next, with ITV1's main drama of the night - Doc Martin - ninth on 5.3m. |

No because its overall ratings for the BBC including its BBC3 repeat are still excellent and its combined audience is close to the 11.5 - 12 million mark. It still out-rates Emmerdale and gets a better audience share. Why would they look on a show (any show) getting a 40% share as bad for their ratings? On that basis Neighbours, Doctors, One O'clock news, Cash in the Attic, Bargain Hunt, Strictly Come Dancing and Doctor Who would all be at risk. Eastenders lows against ITVs tricks this year have not nearly been as bad as Emmerdales in the summer at one point it dropped below 4 million. |

I am so glad I didn't bother to bet on what'd be the most watched TV programme on Christmas Day this year as I'd have lost me shirt on EastEnders as I would have bought into all the hype about Pauline Fowler.

I don't think C4 will be too disappointed by those ratings. It was their highest rated shows of the day after all. The 3pm show got higher ratings than ITV1 at the same time. |

It was a good day for the BBC but I cannot believe how low the figures are. In the early 90's shows like Only Fools and Horses, Bread and big films were getting figures 15 and sometimes 20 million + in the 3 till 6 timeslot on just one channel. The two main channels yesterday dont appear to have got 10 million between them.Either its because there are not enough big draw shows around,or there has been a shift in the nations habits on Christmas Day. It does not seem as though the tv is the place to be after dinner anymore.

The two main channels yesterday dont appear to have got 10 million between them.Either its because there are not enough big draw shows around,or there has been a shift in the nations habits on Christmas Day. It does not seem as though the tv is the place to be after dinner anymore.
Now primetime audiences usually level out at 20 million spread over 200 channels, with maybe 25 million on Christmas night. There are so many other things for people to do now from X boxes, the internet, DVDs the radio even a good old fashioned stroll along the beach front is popular and preferable to a day sat in front of the TV. Also lots of people now eat out on Chritmas day. |

It remains to be seen if any other show rises to take the crown though I think its unlikely-as you suggest people have found other things to do. |

Nice to see TOTP getting a respectable figure, 3 times what it would usually get.

Well done BBC1, and the Dibley team particularly (the highlight this Christmas surely), and to all 4 channels for halting the ratings slide - for this year at least.
No major surprises there - although SCD did better than I expected against Coro St, which itself performed well. I reckon 20m people were watching terrestrial telly between 8-9pm last night, which doesn't happen often in the multi-channel/internet/DVD age. DoND also performed well pulling in loyal audiences to both episodes - bear in mind that Ch4 could normally expect to pull in sub-1m audiences all day on Christmas Day. Putting Green Green Grass on at 3.10pm was a brave move but it didn't work. They should have put Monsters Inc on after The Queen. That film looks to have suffered against the Harry Potter repeat, as I expected. As someone else pointed out above, the 3.10-6pm daytime slot is clearly not what it once was, when the likes of premieres of ET or a Back to the Future film could pull 18m viewers. |

As for next year, I'd have an early punt on the OFAH spinoff Once Upon a Time in Peckham perhaps getting that slot - anything featuring even the briefest of cameos from David Jason is surely heading for a 9.30pm Christmas Day slot. It could be good, but rather smacks of desperation that something mooted for years but never getting beyond the ideas stage is now apparently being made. Other than that - a Men Behaving Badly reunion? Another Royle Family send-off episode? Little Britain in Space? |

DOND seems to have got lost in the Christmas Day fog. From now on, EE breaking through the 10m barrier is going to be a rare event, probably reserved for Christmas Day. Unless the BBC knows how to arrest its decline, I'll eat my hat if it has got >10m viewers on more than a handful of occasions between now and Christmas Eve 2007. In fact, BBC1 might now conceivably only ever pull 10m viewers for football or the SCD Final. And that's amazing really. |
