Not a bad effort, if I may say so myself!

The same really applies to most one-time bankable programmes, BBC or ITV. it's the nature of a multi-channel world coupled with an increasing popularity of PVRs, Sky+ and TV Drive (equating to apersonal Video on Demand). Who knows when some will watch their PVR stuff, could be hours, days or weeks (or maybe not at all).

Would BBC1 have got a higher audience for EE's if they killed off Pauline on a normal weeknight as part of a 1 hour special eg from 7.30 - 8.30 on a Tuesday night?

I think the would have 1m -2m more if they didit that way.

A lot never gets viewed.

I looked at the odds on that market too, EE was the clear favourite at 1.07 so I didn't bother because there's no value in that price.The Vicar of D (which I think is utter tripe btw) was about 2/1-3/1.

Maybe they might now realise that viewers want to be cheered up watching the telly (particiularly on Xmas Day) I would rather stick needles in my eyes than be totally depressed by that guff at any time of the year. God knows theres enough s*** going on in the world without being depressed by death on a bloody soap.

Christmas Day Ratings - I think this is the last year that there is a big mainstream comedy on BBC1 at christmas Which is Very sad!, I think from Next year the BBC could put SCD at 9.00 - 9.30 and put that as its " Big Show " .. If it could pull that ammount against Corrie, Imagine what it could do without it! Little Britain, Doctor Who, My Family, Monsters Inc doing nothing special but not bad either, the 6.30 episode of Eastenders done a lil better than i expected!

Johnny Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean put ITV1's Keeley Hawes to the sword in the Boxing Day ratings battle.
Pirates of the Caribbean on BBC1 became only the third programme over the Christmas period to top 10 million viewers, with an average audience of 10.1 million, according to unofficial overnights.

With four in 10 viewers from 7.30pm last night, the Hollywood movie attracted more than twice the 4.9 million who watched After Thomas on ITV1, starring Hawes and Ben Miles, about a couple and their autistic child.

Pirates of the Caribbean also saw off the return of Anneka Rice and Challenge Anneka to ITV1. In the first of a new series, Rice's efforts to rebuild a village devastated in the tsunami pulled in 3.3 million viewers.

Challenge Anneka also lost out to Channel 4's prime time edition of Deal Or No Deal. The Noel Edmonds quiz drew 3.4 million viewers, a 14% share of the audience at 8pm.

The final edition of Channel 4's Faking It bowed out with 1.3 million viewers at 9pm. The life swap show, in which a Welsh cleaner attempted to transform herself into a burlesque dancer, came fifth out of the five terrestrial channels.

Faking It lost out to BBC2's Phantom of the Opera: Behind the Mask, with 1.6 million, and Channel Five's CSI: Miami, which attracted 2 million viewers.

Channel 4's Charlotte Church Christmas Special was no match for BBC2's Grumpy Old Women at Christmas. The Welsh singer's chatshow drew 800,000 viewers, a fraction of the 2 million who watched Jenny Eclair and Arabella Weir moan about cooking the Christmas turkey.

Earlier, ITV's Celebrity Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, with 4.5 million, lost out to the latest instalment of BBC1's EastEnders, with 8.6 million. Earlier, ITV's Emmerdale, with 6.8 million, beat BBC1's Mastermind Celebrity Special, with 4.2 million.

Ricky Gervais meets Garry Shandling, the latest in the occasional series in which the Office creator meets his comedy heroes, attracted 400,000 viewers at 11.15pm, a 4% share of the audience.

OK, you were pretty close with your Christmas Day predictions, but in the light of the post from cylon6 (and even allowing for the fact that they are overnights), would you like to retract that, or change anything in your post?

Wow! - 10.1 million for Pirates of the Caribbean is huuuge. I was expecting about 8 million, which would of been fantastic anyway. Totally sunk ITV - would of thought Challenge Anneka would get between 5 and 6 million, so that's really disappointing for them.

Definitely. I watched Challenge Anneka and it was absolutely fantastic so shame that it didn't do better than it did. I'm surprised that so many watched POTC. Very rare that a film does that well these days.

It be intresting to see what J & J got?

I'm as blown away as everyone else with the PotC performance. I suppose ITV1 didn't, surprisingly, try to scupper it with a soap as they normally would (see tonight with Ruby in the Smoke), which gave it more of a chance. That said, I thought ITV1's line up was better than BBC1's, but what do I know?!

Although - I was very close with Mastermind, EastEnders, Emmerdale and DoND. And possibly Springwatch/J&J/Lenny Henry - we don't know what they got yet.

Well I agree with you. I've seen POTC before and EastEnders was nothing to get excited about. However, Challenge Anneka was fantastic and After Thomas was brilliant as well. Good night's viewing - and with Emmerdale on before 7pm the main schedule was soap free, and the sort of schedule I think ITV should be doing more of.

So J&J did get a ratings boost from following the pirates, but probably not enough to save it.

Challenge Anneka got beat not only by a children's film (Freaky Friday) but also by an umpteenth showing, mid-afternoon, of Bedknobs and Broomsticks!

It deserved better than that.

Lenny Henry's clips show did even worse than I expected - shame, as I thought it was fairly amusing, if a bit lightweight.

Would be interesting to see how After Thomas performed over the 2 hours. If Challenge Anneka only got 3.3m against the Pirates, it may have started low but picked up a lot of viewers at 9.45pm as the film finished. Thomas didn't really get going until the second hour, so I suspect it may have pulled significantly more than 5m from 9.45-11?

DOND beat Challenge Anneka!

But what people may not realise is that Challenge Anneka was never a ratings collossus. I think ITV will have a better night tonight,

If Ruby In The Smoke started at 9 it'd do better for BBC1; I'm expecting 7 million for it.

Also the soaps ratings will be down tonight because of slightly stronger competition and unusual start times.

I think Ruby In The Smoke will get around 6.6 Million
