After Thomas was a bit depressing for Boxing Night. Not as depressing as EasteEnders but still a bit worthy for the holidays, although in the past BBC1 used to show similar shows on Boxing Night. IIRC The Remains of the Day premiered on BBC1 Boxing Night a few years ago.

This is interesting. Media Guardian has written about the overall ratings picture for 2006.

Channel 4 up in 2006 ratings

Wednesday December 27, 2006
MediaGuardian.co.uk

Noel Edmonds quiz Deal or No Deal helped Channel 4 become the only one of the five terrestrial channels to increase its audience share in 2006.
The channel's all-day share averaged 9.8% in 2006, compared with 9.7% in 2005. Channel 4 beat BBC2 for the second successive year and opened up a record lead of one percentage point.

All four other terrestrial channels lost ground. Channel Five was the biggest loser, down 11% to 5.7% from 6.5% last year. ITV1 was down 9% to 19.7% from 21.6% last year, the first time its all-day share has fallen below the 20% mark.

Both BBC channels also lost ground - BBC2 down slightly to 22.7% from 23.3%, while BBC2 slipped 6% to 8.8% from 9.4% last year.

However, Channel 4 shed audience in the all-important peak time battle, down to 9.8% this year from 10% in 2005. In a reversal of roles, BBC2 turned the tables on Channel 4 by becoming the only terrestrial channel to increase its peak time share, up slightly to 9.2% from 9% in 2005. The other four terrestrial channels all lost out in peak time.

Multichannel TV continued its inexorable growth and accounted for its biggest ever share of viewing in 2006, both across the day and in peaktime.

Multichannel had a 28.2% share of peaktime viewing, up 15% from 24.6% last year. Across the entire day, it was up 13% to 33.2% from 29.5% in 2005.

Terrestrial controllers can take some consolation that the multichannel figures include spin-off channels such as ITV2, E4 and BBC4, as well as the likes of Sky One, Living TV and Sky Sports.

The all-day percentages include audience figures up until December 22, while the peak time shares include ratings until December 17. However, the full year figures for 2006 are likely to vary only marginally from these statistics.

The figures, which was released by Channel 4, measures peaktime hours from 5.30pm until midnight. ITV includes breakfast broadcaster GMTV.

A Channel 4 spokesman said: "Channel 4's outstanding creative strength has been at the heart of our ratings and commercial success. These figures reflect audience appreciation of our diverse and distinctive programming."

BBC director of vision Jana Bennett said all the BBC channels had all turned in strong performances in a "very competitive environment".

"The strength of the BBC portfolio in peak is testimony to the appeal of BBC quality content to audiences, whether it's Strictly Come Dancing on BBC1 or Torchwood on BBC3. It's only going to get tougher as other broadcasters strengthen their portfolios. Creative competition and choice can only be good for the viewers."

A spokesman for ITV said the channel had seven of the top 10 shows of the year, excluding sport.

"ITV has dominated the top shows of the year with the most popular programme of 2006 and the highest rating shows across all the major genres including drama, entertainment, sport and films," he said.

"Across the year ITV has won more than double the audience share to its nearest commercial rival across all hours and almost treble the audience share in peak."

Average all-day audience 2006

BBC1 22.7% (2005: 23.3%)

Channel 4 9.8% (9.7%)
Five 5.7% (6.5%)
Other 33.2% (29.5%)

Average peaktime audience 2006 (5.30pm - midnight)

BBC1 23.3% (2005: 24.1%)
BBC2 9.2 (9%)
ITV1 23.4% (25.5%)

When ITV decided to move Coro St to 8.30 every day this week, the BBC should have responded by moving EastEnders to 7.30 and Ruby in the Smoke to 8. It looks like Ruby pulled a big audience post-Coro St, so it would presumably have done even better with a 30 min head start over Coro and a larger audience for EastEnders.

I like this guessing game. I think Swap Shop will rate higher than Perfect Parents and maybe neck and bitten neck with Dracula.

Dracula - 6 million
Swap Shop - 4.5 million
Perfect Parents - 3.5 million
Benny Hill - 3.5 million

Ruby would have done better if it started at 9 and I wonder how many people knew EastEnders was on yesterday?

Disappointing ratings all round last night then, but particularly Dracula.

Well done Swap Shop though - impressive ratings over 2hrs, and an enjoyable programme (which I've just been watching).

Does anyone know why regional news programmes feature in the overnight ratings but not in the official Top 30s published by Barb? They are seemingly among the most popular programmes on telly but never feature in the official ratings. I assume it's because there are umpteen different programmes around the country, but if around 6m people tune in every day to BBC1 at 6.30pm, why don't the top 30 charts recognise that?

ITV have chosen this week to show all their intelligent drama. Shame the audience is not in the mood.

Not too disappointing perhaps when you consider that Dracula is hardly family entertainment.

But it was one of the main highlights of the BBC's season and has been heavily promoted on-air for more than 3 weeks now. So 5m isn't brilliant, particularly when ITV1 could only muster 3.8m for its competing drama.

Not very good ratings last night! I thought Dracula would atleast get 6 Million, and Perfect Parents would do around 5 and half .. :O What went on last night? haha, the only show that did better than i thought is Last of the Summer Wine, and even the ratings for that are not fantastic!

Anywhooooo what do people think ratings tonight will be like? BBC1 have two big films .. High School Musical and Mrs Henderson Presents ... ITV have The One and Only Michael Jackson

I think ..

High School Musical 6.9 Million
Mrs Henderson Presents 5.4 Million
The One and Only Michael Jackson 3.1 Million

Also, am i the only one who is really enjoying having one big thread to discuss and post ratings? I think this thread or a new one should be carried on past christmas .. its alot better than having loads of dif threads me thinks hee hee!

I agree with you there pepsi max kid Good Ratings last night.

The biggest for Eastenders and Emmerdale but Dracula and Perfect Parents did ok.

Tonight i think BBC will be the big ratings winner again tonight.

Two Brothers , the highly anticipated terrestial premiere of High School Musical and Mrs Henderson Presents.
I reckon

Two Brothers 3.4m
High School Musical 7.1m
Eastenders 10.3m
Mrs Henderson Presents 5.7m

Emmerdale 8.9m
Coronation Street 9.7m
The one and only micheal jackson 4.2m

It was? I thought that it was just one of the Christmas programmes, and promoted as such.

Not brilliant, but OK. Again, this would not have been family viewing, and certainly not everyone's cup of tea. Doctor Who it is not, so i would not have expected ratings of 7 or 8 million.

Yes please. It's great to have this inside info - although whether it will be made available all the time is another matter.
