So, I've been cautious and said 8.9m. I'd be delighted if VoD pulls 12m tonight. |

In that top 100, ITV do not have one entertainment show in the top 40 which isn't soap related. Meanwhile in that top 40, BBC 1 has soaps, movies, comedies, drama, sci-fi, reality TV, a gameshow...and all ITV have are their soaps, it's hilariously ridiculous really.

Vicar's final farewell secures 12.3m for BBC1
Leah Stoker and Leah Stoker 11:15am A new year and new start for The Vicar of Dibley as Dawn French's character moves from vicar to wife and a massive 12.3 million (44.9%) tuned in at 9.30pm for the last ever episode of the BBC1 sitcom. The concluding episode of the two-part special was the most watched programme of the evening. Last night's edition managed to narrowly outperform the Christmas Day show which managed to attract 12.1 million (47.1%). This wasn't the only farewell for the channel as a double bill of EastEnders saw Pauline Fowler laid to rest. The first episode at 8pm managed to attract an impressive 10.7 million (41%) while the second episode at 9pm attracted 9.8 million (36.8%). ITV1's one-off thriller Dead Clever struggled to keep up only attracting 4 million (15.3%) at 9pm. The two-hour drama, starring Suranne Jones and Helen Baxendale started reasonably well despite tough competition from BBC 1 with 4.5 million (17.1%), but viewers were quick to lose interest as the programme dropped nearly 1 million in the first hour to 3.6 million (13.3%) by 10.15pm. Toad and the mole Earlier on in the evening a triple helping of soaps managed to boost the New Year figures for ITV1. Emmerdale at 7pm managed to attract 8.2 million (32%) and a double helping of Coronation Street bumped up the figures even more with 10.5 million (40.1%) at 7.30pm and 10 million (37%) at 8.30pm. BBC 1's star-studded adaptation of The Wind in the Willows managed to attract a reasonable 5.3 million (21.3%). The family drama, which saw Matt Lucas star as Toad and Bob Hoskins as Badger, managed to grow its audience over the 100 minutes starting with 4.5 million (19.6%) at 6.20pm and finishing with 5.7 million (21.3%) at 9.45pm. C4 breaths new life into Brian Channel 4 dedicated the evening schedule to The Life of Brian with a number of programmes taking a closer look at Monty Python's controversial film. The Secret Life of Brian at 8pm managed to attract 1.6 million (6.2%). The film itself followed at 9pm with 2.2 million (8%). Dropping slightly at 10.45pm was What the Python's Did Next which managed 1.2 million (7.6%). BBC 2 eased into the New Year gently with a run of steady figures. Second World War film The Great Escape at 5.15pm managed to attract 2.7 million (11.6%), not far behind was Diving with Dolphins at 8pm which managed 2.5 million (9.5%). Another war film at 9pm, The Four Feathers managed to attract 2 million (7.7%). Five filled its evening schedule with Most Shocking Celebrity Moments 2006 between 9pm and 12.05am which managed 1.2 million (5.3%). All hours shares for Monday 1 January 2007: BBC 1 24.6%, ITV1 16.7%, BBC 2 9%, C4 8.1%, Five 4.4%, multichannel 37.3%. |

Vicar of Dibley goes out on a high
Jason Deans Tuesday January 2, 2007 MediaGuardian.co.uk The last ever Vicar of Dibley is already a contender for highest rating show of 2007, attracting more than 12 million viewers yesterday. BBC1 attracted 12.3 million viewers and a 45% share over an hour from 9.30pm for The Vicar of Dibley finale, as Dawn French's reverend Geraldine Granger finally got hitched to Robin Hood baddy Richard Armitage's Harry. This was 900,000 viewers more than the first of the final two Dibley specials attracted on Christmas Day, although that show got a 47% share, according to unofficial overnights. The highest rating non-sports programme last year was an edition of Coronation Street from March, which attracted 12.5 million viewers, followed by EastEnders, with 12.3 million. Last night's Dibley was up against ITV1 drama Dead Clever, which attracted 4 million viewers and a 16% share between 9pm and 11pm. BBC2's terrestrial movie premiere The Four Feathers drew 2 million viewers and an 8% share between 9pm and 11.05pm, while on Five from 9pm to 12.05am, Most Shocking Celebrity Moments 2006 attracted 1.1 million and 6%. At the heart of Channel 4's Monty Python-themed evening, a repeat showing of the movie Life of Brian attracted 2.2 million viewers and an 8% share between 9pm and 10.45pm. Before that, documentary The Secret Life of Brian drew 1.7 million viewers and a 6% share in the 8pm hour on Channel 4. A second documentary, What the Pythons Did Next, was watched by 1.2 million viewers and attracted a 10% share between 10.45pm and 11.50pm. Earlier in the evening, BBC1's big New Year's Day drama The Wind in the Willows was watched by 5.3 million viewers and attracted a 21% share between 6.20pm and 8pm. The Wind in the Willows was up against ITV1's Emmerdale, which attracted 8.2 million viewers and a 32% share from 7pm. From 7.30pm on ITV1, Coronation Street drew 10.5 million viewers and a 40% share. BBC2's movie repeat, The Great Escape, had 2.7 million viewers and a 12% share between 5.15pm and 8pm. Five's behind the scenes documentary Kenneth Branagh Films The Magic Flute was watched by 200,000 viewers and attracted a 1% share between 7pm and 8pm. In the 8pm hour Five provided more traditional New Year's Day fare, with World's Strongest Man attracting 1.2 million viewers and a 4% share. The BBC's latest Doctor Who spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures, launched yesterday with a one-off special attracting 2.9 million viewers and a 14% share between 4.50pm and 5.50pm. Competition included Channel 4's Deal or No Deal, still riding high with 4.1 million viewers and a 20% share, and ITV1 movie repeat Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which drew 3.1 million and 15%. |

As EastEnders continues its sorry decline, BBC1 needs to rethink its strategy of using it to lock viewers in. Would Dibley have pulled even more if it had started at 9pm I wonder? Anyway, fantastic ratings for VoD - I was well off the mark with that. Given that the Xmas Day episode appears to have put on 0.8m viewers in the official ratings, last night's will presumably get an official figure of c13m - 2007's biggest televison audience may well have already been secured on the first day of the year! |
