The Sci-Fi channel in the US just got finished with series 2 of Doctor Who yesterday. They showed 'Army Of Ghosts' and 'Doomsday' as a double header.
They also annouced that they bought series 3 to be shown in the summer, so they're gradually catching up with the BBC showings. I'm not sure about Torchwood, or when Doctor Who is being shown in other countries, although I understand that the Canadian showings of series 2 have been close to the US showings.

The first series was co-funded in part by Canadas CBC and usually comes second in its time slot which is not bad beacuse the Canadian market is extremly competitive.

On Sci Fi in the states its does remarkably well all things considered and doesn't rate that much lower that Battlestar Galactica which is impressive considering the relative costs of the two series for Sci-Fi.

One can only assume its as much a cash cow for their advertising revenues as it is for BBC overseas sales.

Its also shown on Austrailias ABD.

Well here in the US, Sci-Fi have exclusive rights to premier Doctor Who with BBC America having the repeat rights.

As for Torchwood rumours are that Sci-Fi wants the show for the gap from now untill Season 3 of Dr Who starts. But the execs are a little worried about some of the content and what the FCC will think.

Good thing is that BattleStar is also a little risky.

There's absolutely no chance Torchwood will broadcast on SFC, unless its heavily butchered. I think it'll go straight to DVD, as BBC America probably won't touch it either.

Sarah Jane Adventures probably won't broadcast either.

BSG isn't childishly "risky", and there's no actual swearing beyond mild language. The DVDs have "bullsh*t" once or twice, but on the broadcast they mute the swearing.

The sex scenes are also much more subtle, serious and/or developed, and have reason. And BSG doesn't try to be a "gay" for no reason.

From what American friends have told me the FCC has zero power over cable channels, who in theory anyway, can show whatever they like (as long as it ain't illegal).

They say the problem with Torchwood is that companies may be afraid to advertise during it.
